This change to Google's search results could move your website from the bottom to the top overnight.
The key is in featured snippet optimization. And not every site is eligible – primarily due to the way their content is represented on the page.
Instead of showing a single website within the featured snippet, Google is diversifying their answers by testing out showing up to 3 sites at a time, highlighting relevant sections from the page.
In the example shown, you can see two different websites that have gone from ranking #5 and #8 (hidden down below) to now ranking at the very top of the page.
For anyone that pays attention to CTR metrics for pages that rank in featured snippets compared to lower on the page, the difference can be like night and day. The pages up top get the vast majority of clicks.
Generally, paragraph featured snippet optimization can come down to developing a well-researched, well-written and engaging article that provides the best answer in a 40-50 words snippet of content on the page.
While similar principles apply to the new triple featured snippet test, Google seems to be focusing on a shorter snippet of text to fit within the space available, which appears to be up to a maximum of ~28 words.
Moving forward, it could be smart to considering how well your content is optimized for featured snippets that have a max of 28 words as the parameter (rather than only using the reference for a max of 50 words).
While the triple featured snippet is still just a test, Google is moving fast at the moment, so I wouldn't be surprised if this rolls out soon. Keep an eye out for the opportunities as they arise – it could mean your site has moved from the bottom to the top of SERPs overnight!

There is a major SEO opportunity for eCommerce retailers with Google's generative AI release.
This was an aspect of Google's I/O preview that I believe was lost on many, and could become a key organic traffic driver for some sites.
While we are all now aware of the "Top 3" links to articles presented alongside the AI-powered result, there's also the free product listing component.
Free product listings are an area of Search that Google has been heavily invested in in recent years, with queries that have commercial intent having generative AI now putting them front and center.
At the moment, free product listings are primarily a feature that appears prominently in US search results. And it looks like Google is about to make this feature far more widespread in the near future.
For my clients that currently receive strong exposure in free product listings (the CTR is exceptionally high already), I'm expecting this traffic to increase further.
Google also introduced tracking of free product listings (primarily for Popular Product grids and Product Knowledge Panels) in GSC earlier this year. Identified through the 'Merchant listings' filter, I wrote about this more here: brodieclark.com/merchant-listi…
This means that for sites that have well-optimized product feeds and Structured Data, you'll be able to accurately track changes to clicks/impressions in GSC and adjust your strategy toward any new opportunities.
Again, this is quite an exciting part of Google's introduction of generative AI to Search. Just make sure your free product listings are in check and ready to capitalize on the opportunity!
