Hard to believe it’s taken until 2026 for this kind of reform to land, that says a lot about where the game’s been. The DFB had a similar “breakthrough” a few years back when they finally embraced Horst Wein’s 4-goal mini games for development. Football is painfully slow to separate what works from what doesn’t. Billions go into coach education, only to arrive, eventually, at a basic truth: the simplest solutions are usually the best.

Small-sided 3v3 matches and fewer 11v11 games are at the heart of radical changes planned for youngsters playing grassroots football in England from next season. The new system aims to give children a more enjoyable playing experience. @EnglandFootball trainingground.guru/3v3-matches-at…

@mrmujac @englandyouth Which I understand. EPPP & EFL rules state a player’s academic development shouldn’t be compromised from their involvement with an academy. You highlight the unlikelihood of ⚽️ employment. Knowing this, should academies be held ⬆️ account on players’ academic development?

@LiamTeachCoach @englandyouth Sure but the point I’m making is that there are plenty of professions with low success rates. Or put another way, plenty of qualified professionals but not enough jobs to go around. I’m sure Academies point this out based on my conversations with coaches.

The reality of elite (?) Category 1 academies. Of 4,109 players born 1995–2000: • 97% never made a single Premier League appearance • 70% never earned a pro deal (PL/EFL) • 1 in 10 made 20+ league apps across top 4 tiers Sad state of affairs for English football.

@mrmujac @englandyouth Success could be measured when the ratio of students who attended EPPP academies going to medical schools is greater than those attending state schools?

@LiamTeachCoach @englandyouth Not sure as I don’t have a son in an Academy and not privy to the conversations that take place. But it’s the same as wanting my kid to be a doctor…it’s an elite profession so most medical students don’t make it (think it’s 8% success rate). And they have to be good to get in…

@LiamTeachCoach @englandyouth 3/3 you could argue that there is a decent percentage of local players better than foreign imports. Clubs want immediate results rather than to develop youngsters. But we are still talking about small percentages overall. It’s an expectation issue for me.

@SimonBrundish This is a really good question, Simon! If academic development is compromised as a result of participation in a club’s academy, then unfortunately the rules are not being adhered to.

What age in PE should we explicitly teach the 'correct' way to do some FMS, such as an overarm throw? I've always been a big fan of 'exploration' and allowing children to figure out how to send an object from A to B, for example. But when should it be taught correctly? Y1? Y2?

The drop-off in participation at 13–16 isn’t a motivation problem. It’s an experience problem. Young people stay where they feel competent and connected. Coaches shape that more than any facility ever will. What have you seen work? 👇

Off the back of this I’m now after ideas. We have lots of equipment but most importantly we have a good amount of space in the middle of the gym. Looking at developing some kind of functional movement/fitness/weight bearing SoW. I know a bit about hyrox but just after ideas🤝

ADVICE NEEDED! My school has just invested in a state of the art fitness suite and I’m wanting to purchase posters that students can use to plan training programmes etc. Does anyone know of companies that do this? TIA👍

The problem with the ecological approach to coaching? It assumes players will figure it out technically. Many don’t. ⚽ @CoachingFamily

@f_gslow @WALKTHRUs_5 Yes, it can be. I've seen it. Remote SLT folk deciding in their meetings what all the teachers should do - but not really having a sense of how that's ever really going to happen.

Seeing teachers lament an 8 week term saying it’s too much. It isn’t. The real issue is the school day. Decompress the school day and the levels of fatigue that set in over the weeks will be a fraction of what it is now.

Who decides the model of (Ofsted-mandated 😔) Retrieval Practice you use in your lessons? 🤔 Each MAT running its own PD programme means a town could have ten schools and ten versions of Retrieval Practice😖, all enforced on pain of support plan🤯, and all adamant they are right. 🤦‍♂️ And that fits with what we found in our paper on RP which you can read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
