The Arbitrum Security Council has taken emergency action to freeze the 30,766 ETH being held in the address on Arbitrum One that is connected to the KelpDAO exploit. The Security Council acted with input from law enforcement as to the exploiter’s identity, and, at all times, weighed its commitment to the security and integrity of the Arbitrum community without impacting any Arbitrum users or applications. After significant technical diligence and deliberation, the Security Council identified and executed a technical approach to move funds to safety without affecting any other chain state or Arbitrum users. As of April 20 11:26pm ET the funds have been successfully transferred to an intermediary frozen wallet. They are no longer accessible to the address that originally held the funds, and can only be moved by further action by Arbitrum governance, which will be coordinated with relevant parties.

It’s looking increasingly likely that the root cause of the exploit is a compromised LayerZero “Validator” Basically a single node was able to push through a tx to move $290M in assets. No time lock, nothing. Unfortunate circumstance tbh. But DeFi is not to blame here.

It’s been quite a stressful month for our team and community due to an ongoing trademark dispute. At the end of the day, the name of our app is not the defining feature for the project. A name change does not bother us. The main source of stress, and what really opened our eyes, was how quickly and arbitrarily a project can be deplatformed on a guilty until proven innocent basis. You are punished (deplatformed) indefinitely until you sort it out through legal proceedings. Fighting that would require dragging this dispute along via legal channels, which is not just costly, but also a major distraction, and not to mention extremely slow. More importantly, we would not have access to our X account while such a prolonged legal challenge were to play out. That last fact alone makes the approach untenable. How can we expect to operate without such an essential marketing tool? This ordeal unfolded at a terrible time for us since we had a major marketing campaign slated to kick off the new year, coinciding with several project upgrades. But those plans were upended when our primary communication medium was arbitrarily suspended. Anyway, I honestly hate victim playing, it’s not my style nor the philosophy of our project. All this is to say that we chose to move decisively in the optimal direction for our immediate and long-term future. Next week, we will complete a brand modification and begin operating under a new trademark/domain. All other aspects of the project will remain consistent. But there’s something else. These events sparked an idea within our team. It all comes down to one question: How do we fundamentally strengthen our product distribution strategy to improve user growth while reducing reliance on any single medium? We believe we have the answer to that question, and it does not require much change from a development perspective. The team is really excited about these new set of features and how they tie in to our prediction markets. I cannot wait to share more. For now 🫡

The goal is not to onboard people to Ethereum. The goal is to onboard people to openness and self-sovereignty. We fail if we don't onboard people. But we also fail if we achieve mass adoption of walled gardens with no self-sovereignty left. This is the wei. (In particular, note that this means the whole "let's not ask people to download browser extensions or other custom software" direction should be viewed as an onboarding strategy ONLY. The ultimate goal is, yes, we want people to download browser extensions and other custom software, because otherwise, how else are people going to actually verify the chain?)
