Over the last three years, housebuilding in London has collapsed. Molior recorded just 2,158 private starts in the first half of 2025, around 5% of London’s (low) targets, and still falling. What is going on? I have posed this question to numerous specialists, most of whom cannot comment publicly for professional reasons. This thread is a summary of what I have gleaned.

Just because you live in the suburbs and are surrounded by other conservatives doesn’t mean that the zoning of that neighborhood is conservative by association. It is not.
Individual property rights are a fundamentally conservative value. Don’t forget it.

It’s really hard to argue that “YIMBY has yet to break into conservative circles” when literally as we speak, there is a republican-led effort to make it easier to build more housing in Texas. Dan Patrick made YIMBY an explicit priority at the state house this session.
