We look to the state as one of the key components in fighting violence but this sits in tension with its simultaneous role as a holder of legitimate force, often deployed to discipline, contain, and silence. 🧵

The state’s promise of protection exists alongside its monopoly on violence, which is used to silence dissent and suppress resistance. Protection and punishment are not opposites here they are entangled in the same architecture of power.

Over the past months, we have been in deep conversation with our Community of Practice, thinking critically about sexual violence and the systems that sustain it. This week in New York, we were proud to launch a position paper born from these reflections.🧵

The position paper is titled: Recentering African Indigenous Knowledge to Prevent and Respond to Sexual Violence. It asks an important question: what knowledge systems guide how we understand, prevent, and respond to sexual violence?
