@iansltx @IanLandsman I am using Grok 4.20 as the main driver with local models run on a Mac Mini as the workers to keep costs down on the API with Grok 4.20. They forced me to find alternatives to them and I did. Works just fine now! Anthropic is in my rear view mirror. Xai gets my $, they do not!

Hot take. Claude is doing the right thing. Give the real customers a better experience (keep infra working well for them) while ditching people having their bots loop over their calendar 100,000 times a day.

@LibertyQuest76 They're getting $2k of tokens for $200. There are limited tokens. It makes sense Claude wants to focus the subsidized tokens to people most likely to pay more long term (business customers) not people running claws as a hobby.

Starting tomorrow at 12pm PT, Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw. You can still use these tools with your Claude login via extra usage bundles (now available at a discount), or with a Claude API key.

I don't know what the fuss is about. Anthropic's rules on using subscriptions are very simple: Claude Code = OK Claude's online platform = OK Agent SDK running in personal software = OK... ish? Agent SDK running in commercial software = NOT OK Claude Code running in CI = ?? Oh, maybe it's not so simple... Agent SDK running in CI = ?? claude -p running in CI = ?? claude -p running in personal software = OK claude -p running on open source software, but run on my personal computer = ?? claude -p running on distributed sandboxes, kicked off by me = ?? Distributing open source software which relies on claude -p, and documenting how to use your subscription with it = ?? A thousand other edge cases = ?? Let me be clear. I have never before experienced, from any developer tool, such a frustrating lack of clarity over the basic terms of usage. I personally asked, 3 weeks ago, and have received nothing but delays. The recent @bcherny announcement did absolutely nothing to clarify things. I say this as someone who just released a Claude Code course - my incentives all align with supporting Anthropic.

I asked Claude Opus 4.6 what it thinks about Anthropic blocking apps like OpenClaw from using Claude subscriptions. Pretty smart take: “The execution was rough. - Timing and communication were poor. Dropping it on a Friday night with next-day enforcement felt adversarial. - The deeper tension is platform lock-in. - And the ironic part: this looks like a fixable technical problem. Prefix caching, like Boris showed in his OpenClaw PRs, could have made this a collaboration story instead of a ban story.”

@altryne @openclaw @bcherny The only clarification they did was pull the rug on a lot of paying customers. Those customers will find alternatives to Claude. Another stupid move by this company!

Just as Anthropic clarifies @openclaw usage to be only allowed via Extra Usage, @bcherny apparently contributes 4 caching fixes into the OpenClaw harness 😳

The truth is finally out. Anthropic just emailed every Claude subscriber. The rate limits weren't a bug. Third party tools like OpenClaw were putting "outsized strain" on their systems. Anthropic's fix? Cut them off. Starting April 4, third-party harnesses no longer get your subscription limits. Pay-as-you-go only. To make up for it, every subscriber gets a one time credit equal to their monthly subscription. I'm getting $200 in extra usage. This is huge. If this is what was killing Claude Code rate limits for Max plan users, tomorrow should feel like a completely different product. I'll be testing Claude Opus 4.6 all day and reporting back. Stay tuned.

We're big fans of open source. I actually just put up a few PRs to improve prompt cache efficiency for OpenClaw specifically. This is more about engineering constraints. Our systems are highly optimized for one kind of workload, and to serve as many people as possible with the most intelligent models, we are continuing to optimize that. When you use an API key or overages it should still work. The issue was just subs. If you still want to cancel, we're giving full refunds. We know not everyone realized this isn't something we support, and this is an attempt to make it clear and explicit.

@bcherny Then you don't need my $200 a month any longer, I'll find an alternative. I won't turn to Anthropic again after this! Thanks for nothing!
