Contrary to much scholarly opinion, he was also a generous mentor to many poets who were women. I discussed this topic briefly for @LightPoetryMag about a decade ago in an essay about the history of women in light verse.

Lucky to be back--almost killed 5 1/2 hours ago by the PA Dept. of Transportation. Idiots were taking down trees top-down with a crane & woodchipper. It spewed big chunks of wood onto I-84 going east at the 18 miles mark. One just missed my windshield, one put a dent in my car inches from the driver's side window. State Police were apathetic. @GovernorShapiro--do something before someone gets killed!!!

@alfred_nicol 's collection is so good the proofreader was moved to write a note praising the most striking aspects of the poems, with praise like "perfect" "masterly Shakespearean sonnet" "touching" "excellent" "heartbreaking" and my favorite comment: "out-Herricks Herrick"
