Apple has introduced end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices.
With the iOS 26.5 update iPhone users can now exchange truly private messages with Android users via the default Messages app and Google Messages. A lock icon appears in the chat when encryption is active.
This requires both devices to run the latest messaging apps and connect to carriers supporting RCS Universal Profile 3.0 with end-to-end encryption.
It covers texts, photos, videos, files, typing indicators, and read receipts.
Traditional SMS and MMS fallback messages remain unencrypted.
