The story behind AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” is that of one of hard rock’s most powerful and recognizable riffs, born from a simple guitar idea. In the late ’80s, during the Blow Up Your Video tour, Angus Young was practicing at home when a “trick” or guitar exercise came to him: that lightning-fast, addictive pattern of notes that opens the song (played almost entirely with one hand). He showed it to his brother Malcolm, who immediately added a powerful backing rhythm. Between the two of them, they built the entire structure of the song in just a few months. The most famous urban legend claims that Angus was inspired while traveling on a plane that was struck by lightning and nearly crashed. It’s a story the band told for years, but Angus himself debunked it in the liner notes for the reissue of The Razors Edge (2003): it was just a guitar exercise, nothing more. Brian Johnson wrote the lyrics in classic AC/DC style: energy, power, and electricity. They liked the title “Thunderstruck” because it sounded strong and fit perfectly with the band’s image (“AC/DC = Power”). It was recorded in 1990 for the album The Razors Edge, produced by Rick Rubin, and became the first single. The song marked AC/DC’s triumphant return after a few difficult years for the band.
