I don't share much about my family here on X. Today.. I want to. .
It's hard to believe I wrote this eight years ago today..
.On one hand it feels like a lifetime ago. On the other hand I can remember every moment, every emotion and every aspect of that day. From the early morning phone call from Mom to finally going to bed that night for the first time without my Dad...That sad and yet glorious day... So, here's to Dad, James Ray, JR, Coach Hyatt and whatever you may have known him as. .......
He went by a lot of names.
Mom called him a husband.
Some folks called him Coach. Some called him Teacher. Some called him names we probably don't want to print. Other's called him a friend and a co-worker.
Around the house, me and Matthew Hyattjust called him Dad.
Reed called him Pa-Pa.
God called him a Christian and a loyal servant.
Today, May 16, 2018 God called him home.
James Ray Hyatt traveled a lot of roads, many behind the wheel of a yellow dog school bus over the years. From Olton to Amarillo, and points in-between, his journey and family would end up in Lubbock. Along the way he touched countless lives from the classroom to the football field, from the soccer pitch to the track - Coach Hyatt invested his life in building, creating and growing people.
While the final few years of his life we're spent fighting off the effects of Alzheimer's disease, God never let it take the core personality of who he was.
Right up until a week ago, if you saw him, if you visited him and talked with him, you would have known you were with James Ray.
We'll celebrate the release of Coach Hyatt from this world's pain unto God's Paradise Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lakeridge Chapel here in Lubbock.
Make no mistake, Coach Hyatt finished his race with just as much gusto, pride, grit and guile as he exhorted any of his athletes to do over the years. Of course he did all of that while acting goofy, having fun and being. . . Coach Hyatt.

The Texas Quote of the Day: "To call our thimblerigging, swashbuckling, swaggering governor a common garden liar would be the grossest flattery and an insult to common garden liars. Farmer Jim is a farce, and my prediction is that he is riding to the biggest fall, personally and politically, in the short and simple annals of the misguided politicians of Texas."
---- Will Hogg talks about the character of Governor Jim "Pa" Ferguson, 1917. Will Hogg was the son of previous governor Jim Hogg, the brother of the famed Ima Hogg, and a prominent University of Texas alumnus. Will was speaking out against Governor Ferguson after the Governor demanded that UT fire six professors whose ideology did not align with his. When asked the reason, Ferguson said, "I am the governor of Texas. I don't have to give reasons." I read Will Hogg's comment and thought "Dang, Will ... Tell us how you really feel!" Also, "thimblerigging?" What the heck?

@TracesofTexas Deane photography studios must have been everywhere. Waco, Houston, where else? This is my grandmother in 1893.

A hand-tinted portrait of a young woman in Waco circa 1895. The hand-tinting was done by the photographer, Jervis C. Deane, who had developed that skill while working for his brother, Granville. If the name "Jervis C. Deane" rings a very small bell, you'll remember that he's the man who took the infamous photos of the "Crash at Crush" spectacle, when two trains rammed into each other headlong as a planned event which 40,000 people attended. The resulting explosion of the two trains cost Jervis one eye, which was pierced by glass. But this is a lovely shot, isn't it?

@tubingtyler1 I got a Watch Duty notification early this morning about the fire, but it wasn’t until later I heard about the crash. 💔

@flatland_sports @Oscar_R_Geeho2 Many folks assume Lubbock was named after Thomas’ brother, Governor Francis R. Lubbock.

@mymomcare No since I learned a later owner was murdered in the front yard by his stepson. Bad juju there now.

@ARBAyala By the time I was 13, I’d been driving our “real” boat for years. So, my father trusted me to be able to take the little rented aluminum boat out on Caddo by myself. Never told him I didn’t pay attention and drove that sucker part way up a cypress knee.

🌿 Caddo Lake 🌿
Straddling the Texas-Louisiana border in East Texas, Caddo Lake is one of the state’s few large natural lakes.
Spanning about 25,400 acres of winding bayous, wetlands, and shallow waters (average depth around 8 feet), it offers a serene, moss-draped landscape unlike most places in Texas.
🌲 One of the finest mature bald cypress forests in the U.S.
The lake features an impressive flooded bald cypress ecosystem, some trees estimated at hundreds of years old.
Their distinctive “knees” (pneumatophores) emerge from the water, creating a maze of channels perfect for paddling, with Spanish moss adding to the haunting beauty.
🌍 Internationally Recognized Wetland
Designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1993 (one of only about two dozen in the U.S.), Caddo supports rich biodiversity: dozens of fish species, over 200 bird species, alligators, otters, beavers, and rare turtles. It’s a vital habitat for migratory birds and aquatic life.
🪵 Shaped by the Great Raft
The lake formed naturally over centuries due to the “Great Raft” a massive logjam on the Red River that backed up water into the Cypress Bayou system around the early 1800s. (While Caddo legend links it to an earthquake, geologists attribute it to gradual buildup of debris.)
🛢️ Pioneer of Over-Water Oil Drilling
In 1911, the world’s first over-water oil platform, Ferry Lake No. 1, was built here by Gulf Refining Company. This innovation in Caddo Lake helped pioneer techniques later used for offshore drilling.
🐚 The Pearl Rush of 1909
Freshwater mussels in the lake produced pearls, sparking a short-lived “pearl rush.” Locals and visitors harvested them until rising water levels from a dam made it impractical. Some mussel populations remain today.
Caddo Lake is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and wildlife watching. Part of it lies within Caddo Lake State Park, offering trails, camping, and boat access. It’s a peaceful slice of wild East Texas that feels timeless.

@karenmccay5244 I watch British archeology shows. Wanna know about hypocaust tiles or why there’s little evidence of homesites in the years after the Romans left, I got ya. 😂

I like. New Mexico is Texas Tech’s 8th most played opponent believe it or not and the regionalism works great.
Now please get a P4 team, Kirby.

@RHH3907 @1thread6flags Yes. It’s my understanding he came to Lubbock shortly after the tornado.
English

@LilaCave @1thread6flags I saw a PBS documentary on Dr. Fujita. He had already developed it but this was his first EF-5. If you ever catch that it is worth watching.

On this day in 1953, Waco was ravaged by a tornado that tore through the heart of the city. The storm killed 114 people and seriously injured another 145; 196 business buildings were completely destroyed, and 396 were damaged so badly that they had to be torn down.

@1thread6flags @RHH3907 That Lubbock tornado helped with the development of the Fujita Scale (F Scale).
