revisiting some of my favorite anime, a medium i dont usually indulge in. Bebop, Lain, Akira, Ghost in the Shell. any recommendations? please no shonen. i hate that shit, with the childish protagonists, constant flashbacks & internal monologuing

@neogeo8man Shōnen as a demographic category isn’t inherently flawed, but its industrialization especially through long-running battle series has produced a highly standardized narrative formula. Over time, this has led to trope saturation, predictable storytelling, and this stigmata.

@neogeo8man I digress. I think the fact it's aimed at younger audience gives them some liniency. Yes a lot of anime fans act like they are above the medium because of its "flaws". But I think it's more a thing of prefrence than it being actually bad. I think the problem is rather the wish...

@neogeo8man I don't think there is an inherent problem with Shounen but they do tend to have the most half assed adaptions by far. As for the traits, it's a lot of the times become clichee. I don't think the fathers of the genre fall into the same pitfalls & that makes them greater in a way

@LimitLuca I gave but on JJK TV very quick. they messed up the protag's characterization as early as ep 1 (being forced to eat the finger as a last resort vs "oh this will make me stronger? nice, bottoms up!"), general poor aesthetics etc

@LimitLuca I think David's Jotaro vs Dio adaptation was just kinda dog shit but the OVA version maintained a lot of fighting shonen monologuing and whatnot still

@neogeo8man I think a lot of Shounen is badly adapted. Either wrongly paced or they cut character moments in order to have more screentime for fighting. Examples would include: One Piece, JJK & a lot of others. Even DavidProductions Jojo suffers through a lot of this.

@LimitLuca I agree the OVAs are better but I don't think that's because traditionally adapting fighting shonen manga is wrong

@BattlerDryHump it's also an improvement over the storyline of the manga, a lot of scenes are brought to life and all of the added ones are great
