Todd Howard, Peter Molyneux, and David Cage walk into a bar. This joke is now a completely underwhelming interactive experience and I'm sorry if you expected something better.

@andrew12la For real. This is such a better exploration of themes than what most of the discourse is. He's a victim of his own cowardice, which ultimately leads him down a dark path.

@FranklinH3000 I lived across the street from a local rental store. We rented from them nearly every weekend, movies AND games. It's a source of my love for horror films. This is like... a normal thing people experienced? You're the exception to the norm I think.

@sawyeurism I mean, in a very convoluted way that the protagonist isn't considering, yes it's a selfish wish. Him not considering her wishes in his wish is the point of the story. I don't think it's "damn this guy is a villain", more so it is "damn this guy is naive and doesn't respect her."

On this subject: Obsession is a well-made, very small-scale horror movie with extremely apparent flaws, first and foremost a narrative glibness and emotional incuriosity you'd expect from an internet sketch comedy team

So many weird responses to a new crop of filmmakers making the leap from YouTube videos to directing features, as if it's somehow not completely natural that the future of Hollywood is getting their start making online content. Film school for a new generation. Get used to it.

@PattyNest @Jermaine_kiing He's a negligent cat owner for not being home? Cuz he got talked into going out instead of wallowing in despair? I mean, he's clearly distraught about it and trying to find a way to cope. I just think this is a weird path to go down when there's so many other red flag moments.

@Linktm @Jermaine_kiing It’s possible. It’s also possible that he was negligent: Some things are likely to be up to interpretation. And the way I see it. He was being a negligent Kat owner focusing too much on his woo for me crush

@ScarletWidow901 I agree with everything you said however on the other end of the spectrum there are people claiming he is a pure evil character with no nuance which isn't true, he is more interesting as a villain because we see desperation and naivety turn into cruelty and selfishness gradually

I want to write something about this film cus I genuinely love the psychological aspects of it. I am not shocked that people (men) support him. All they saw was a guy who wanted to be loved & used a magical stick. They say “he didn’t know it was gonna actually work” as a +
𝕶𝖆𝖙🕷️@fadetokat

Why are some of yall defending this bummy looking mf. He’s the true villain in all this

@PattyNest @Jermaine_kiing Sure. I just don't think it's something you can assign a moral attribute to (or the director intends for us to) though. That's a very specific set of circumstances that had to occur. Maybe the cabinet had just stopped holding close and opened while he was out.

@Linktm @Jermaine_kiing So it seems like an accident and his own negligence. Sure sometimes things happen. But as a pen owner, you still need to make sure that they don’t accidentally get into things that could kill them.

@PattyNest @Jermaine_kiing Needless to say we duct taped the shit out of it after that. So, honestly, it seemed like a very believable freak accident. Which is why they kept showing him struggle to close the cabinet right after finding the cat.

@PattyNest @Jermaine_kiing His medicine cabinet didn't properly shut, cat got into the cabinet and played with the pill bottle eventually opening it somehow (loose lid?) I had a kitten that somehow opened an old chute door above our bathroom toilet and tried to jump in. We rescued her just in time.

algorithms are so funny. i just saw someone ask how Obsession is making more at the box office with very little advertising than “the new Henry Cavil movie.” no idea what you’re talking about. i can confidently say i’ve seen zero ads for a new Henry Cavil movie.

@Jermaine_kiing Yes. Not in the same vein as later on, but he buys her a toy instead of an actual gift. Doesn’t even give it to her. Calls her nickname he knows she doesn’t like. And the whole thing with his cat bothers the hell out of me… He’s not a good guy at the start.

@_48nes @MRST3ACH Honestly that's my fave thing about the film. We never actually know any of Nikki's actual feelings or motivations because we're never given the story directly from her pre-wish. There is absolutely a reality where Baron shot his shot and it worked out in the end.

⚠️obsession spoilers⚠️ - - - - - - - - i do believe that nikki told sarah she sees bear as a brother but sarah also told bear that she’s good at hiding her feelings when she has a crush so my dark theory is that she’s previously saw bear as a brother but as they grew closer those

@Eon1Eno All the discourse was "I'm gonna watch the unasked for sequel with the white woman that I assume is the same premise as this." :-/

@DandyMystified @PhxntomHaunt Antagonists can also be tragic tho. I feel like that's what is lost in the discourse. Baron IS a tragic figure, not because of any external force but because of his own ineptitudes and cowardice. I think you can feel bad about the path that led here without being a rape apologist

Men really watched Obsession, saw Nikki be stripped from her autonomy, be assaulted, and say Bear is nuanced or state that his character isn't that bad. What a smack in the mouth for people that have been through that sort of abuse. It's disgusting.

@CinemaPrincipia @codylarae_ @ZachTheRide3D A key point is the line in the drive home where Baron doesn't understand the difference between romance and love and conflates the two. It's your first clue that he's emotionally immature, but also isn't able to truly grasp the difference between "real Nikki" and "fake Nikki".

Way too much apologizing going on for the lead character in Obsession you guys need to learn how to watch genre man. These are morality plays! The movie isn’t grey area-ing his plight, he wishes the girl he has a crush on will love him because it’s abundantly clear he’s a coward

Aside from Inde’s performance and the insanely creepy cinematography/lighting, one of my favorite moments in Obsession is when Bear is reading a Reddit thread about One Wish Willows and someone wrote “my mom has been ugly all her life and now she’s gorgeous!”
