The Iowa DNR has described the snapping turtle as a having "a big head, a long tail, and a nasty disposition." Can't say we disagree, as we've seen a few at the Wickiup Hill Learning Center. Please be nice, and enjoy them without interrupting their busy schedules.

Have you seen a few tree frogs hanging around? You may hear them frequently, but they are masters of camouflage and will change color as a response to their environment. You may find them in trees, shrubs, near water, or maybe at the biotope at the wetland at Wickiup Hill.

This snake hibernaculum was created by students with @IowaBIG the Hitaga Sand Ridge Prairie Preserve in partnership with Linn County Conservation. This hibernaculum is a man-made habitat built to keep snakes from freezing or "drying out" during winter and provide shelter.

Recent rains allowed for our wetlands in many of our areas to fill, something we haven't seen for awhile due to the recent drought. Wetlands help improve water quality by acting as a natural filter, removing many harmful substances before they end up in our waterways

These closures would affect Lower A-Loop, Lower B-Loop, and C-Loop campsites. Some camping in areas in the Matsell Bridge Campground would also be affected. Park staff is taking appropriate steps in anticipation of the potential flooding, which includes notifying current campers

Due to recent rains upstream along the Wapsipinicon River watershed, high water levels are anticipated May 24-26 at Pinicon Ridge Park which would lead to the closure of the lower camping loops at the Flying Squirrel Campground at Pinicon Ridge Park.
