RARE SELENELION on Tuesday morning, March 3! This will be visible along the East Coast! It occurs 6:04 to roughly 6:25 a.m.! A "selenelion" is when you have the sun rising in the east AND a total lunar eclipse at moonset in the west. You'll see the rusty brown or red moon setting at the same time. For everyone in the United States, expect to see the moon transform into a brownish-red rust as it slips into the Earth's shadow. (This is a total lunar eclipse.) Totality lasts 58 minutes. But for folks on the Eastern Seaboard, you'll be able to see both the start of totality AND sunrise simultaneously on opposite horizons for just a few minutes... meaning you're in the midst of a PERFECT planetary alignment. It's rare to experience a selenelion in any given place. Now the tricky part will be physically putting yourself in a location to see both horizons at once. That's why someplace high up, like a hillside, mountain or even tall building will be perfect. (I'll be atop my high-rise building in Washington D.C., for example). If you're on an airplane, even better! Imagine being able to see sunrise out one window and a lunar eclipse out the other side! If anyone gets good photos, send them our way! The eclipse will be ongoing at the time of moonset, so it'll be rusty red all the way down as it dips below the horizon.
