Just a quick update from Phnom Penh. Cambodia. Everyone here is drilled, ready and trained for the apocalypse should it occur. That's a lot of people trained and ready and it all definitely adds up to an eerie experience. It's not just dress-up and play-around for a bit of a laugh, far from it. I won't go on about it here suffice to say it's a full-on experience in training. It's certainly way above the level I received as a Metropolitan police officer for all those years. facebook.com/share/p/1Cm7kc…

Japan isn't just losing its vitality in its homeland, but also throughout Asia. Japan used to be the top nationality that got the most work permits in Thailand, now its China by far, and this has accelerated since COVID. Japanese companies in Southeast Asia are less competitive, less modern, pay less well, and as a result they're retreating from the market. In a way it is quite sad, because there used to be some really iconic Japanese neighborhoods in Bangkok, but they're increasingly far less Japanese. What is old is new again, Bangkok was initially dominated by Southern Chinese migrants hungry for business, and so it is increasingly again.

Nobody who has spent any time there is shocked by this. That place is crawling with Chinese who are all rich but mysteriously spend their days loitering in places frequented by JPL scientists and such. Short hop over to El Segundo as well.

This is an extremely Singaporean thing: Almost every gathering with friends, this question will ALWAYS somehow come up “How much do you need to make per month to be comfortable?” I have my answer What’s yours?

Siem Reap is one of the most underrated relocation spots in Asia especially if you're a digital nomad with a young business to grow 🇰🇭 Here's why it works: → Long-term visa is easy to get with unlimited extensions (~$300/year, no heavy requirements) → USD based economy, no currency gap between your income and expenses → Open a bank account with just a visa + rental lease → Cheap accommodation, transport & food → Low city stress, easy to get around and drive → Incredibly kind people → Younger generations in Siem Reap widely speak English → 5* service even at budget prices → Territorial tax system. As a digital nomad with foreign clients, your income is generally not taxed locally with no remittance trigger on transfers You can literally live well for less than $1K/month. Since recently, a flat 20% capital gains tax applies to most securities, investment assets and foreign currency gains. Real estate CGT has been further delayed to January 2027. Crypto remains in a grey zone.. Is Cambodia perfect? Far from it. Corruption, poverty, healthcare limitations and heavy pollution during the dry season are real challenges. But the economy is growing, things are improving and the direction is promising. I have seen the evolution since the first time I came here 15 years ago. Choosing Siem Reap early as your base could bring serious advantages in a few years.

Some you win, some you lose. Today I admit defeat on my V8 e30 project, I don't have the energy to deal with starting again and don't think the quality of work done so far is high enough to invest more energy. 5 years fighting local shops has beaten me ! Don't want to leave it rotting over my summer holiday time also. Simplify the collection and free up workshop space. Luckily someone else has skills I don't so time to cut my losses and pass it on. Insert meme. Broken dream this one.
