Album of the day. With her seventh album, 1975's The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Joni Mitchell defied expectations, pushing her sound far beyond the folk intimacy of 1970's Ladies of the Canyon and 1971's Blue for a jazz-infused, sonically adventurous landscape that was also worlds away from 1972's For the Roses and 1974's Court and Spark. Lyrically, she dismantles the illusions of suburban privilege, toxic masculinity, and societal facades with vivid storytelling. From the familiar jazz-pop romanticism of opener/lead single "In France They Kiss on Main Street" to the agitated Moog and proto-sample Burundi assembly line drums of "The Jungle Line" all the way to the shimmering disillusionment of "Harry's House / Centerpiece," every song is a masterclass in atmosphere and nuance. Critics couldn't wrap their heads around it during its initial release, but decades later, it's one of her boldest, avant-garde works.
