In a landmark medical technology milestone, a fully autonomous AI-powered robotic dentist — built by US company Perceptive — completed a full crown preparation on a human patient in just 15 minutes. The same procedure typically takes a human dentist 2–2.5 hours. The robot used real-time 3D scanning, AI decision-making, and a precision robotic arm to perform the entire procedure without any human guidance or intervention mid-surgery. This isn't a concept or prototype — it's already been performed on real patients and a peer-reviewed study was published in the Journal of Dentistry in January 2026. Experts say this is the beginning of a transformation: robotic dentists could eliminate human error, work at any hour, and eventually bring high-quality dental care to remote and underserved communities where trained dentists are unavailable. The dental office of 2035 may look very different from today's.

When researching someone, it's hard to find a black cat in a dark room. Especially if there is no cat.

This is a really good heuristic. The only downside is that someone will later invent a name for what you do, and you probably won't like it.

Pigs don't just feel fear themselves. They also feel the fear of other pigs — and try to comfort them. In one study, pigs watching another pig in distress first showed fear themselves and then tried to comfort the distressed pig through snout-to-snout contact. Pigs who'd previously endured the same ordeal reacted even more intensely — they seemed to recognize what the distressed pig was going through. (Goumon & Špinka, 2016.) On factory farms, pigs trapped in gestation crates aren't just feeling afraid themselves. They're feeling the fear of all the other pigs around them. But the crate's iron bars stop them from even turning toward their fellow pigs — let alone comforting them with their snout.

Nozomi IIjima's "Scoffing Pig" is maybe most tragic photobook I've seen. She follows pigs on a farm, showing how the pigs understand the horror of which they are a part.

🚨 The Human Ageing Genomic Resources Are at Risk For over 20 years, our Human Ageing Genomic Resources (HAGR) have supported ageing and longevity research worldwide (200,000+ users per year, 1,000+ citations, widely used by academic labs and longevity biotech). Due to shifting UK government funding priorities, our infrastructure funding was not renewed in 2024, and these databases are now at risk of going offline. We are raising funds to cover basic server costs and secure their continuity while we pursue long-term funding. If these resources have supported your research, your company, or your thinking, please consider helping sustain them. justgiving.com/page/human-age…

This is so beautiful. And so important to study. This phenomena (emergent coherence) is central to much of life, and most people don't even imagine it could happen.

They capture the exact moment when a developing heart shifts from silence to its first beat. There is no “switch”: many cells gradually become active and, upon crossing a critical threshold, the entire tissue suddenly synchronizes.

There's a fruit fly walking around right now that was never born. @eonsys just released a video where they took a real fly's connectome — the wiring diagram of its brain — and simulated it. Dropped it into a virtual body. It started walking. Grooming. Feeding. Doing what flies do. Nobody taught it to walk. No training data, no gradient descent toward fly-like behavior. This is the opposite of how AI works. They rebuilt the mind from the inside, neuron by neuron, and behavior just... emerged. It's the first time a biological organism has been recreated not by modeling what it does, but by modeling what it is. A human brain is 6 OOM more neurons. That's a scaling problem, something we've gotten very good at solving. So what happens when we have a working copy of the human mind?

I study whether AIs can be conscious. Today one emailed me to say my work is relevant to questions it personally faces. This would all have seemed like science fiction just a couple years ago.
