Radiolarians are microscopic marine plankton that build intricate silica skeletons. Their fossils help scientists understand past ocean conditions and climate history, and their symmetry has inspired scientific illustration for over a century.

Foraminifera may be microscopic, but they’re major players in reef science. These single-celled organisms build calcium carbonate shells that become part of reef sand and seafloor sediments. Scientists use them to track water quality, reef health, and even past climate.
