Mobile Phones on Aircraft. I am often asked why we have to either switch off our mobile phones on aircraft - or at least put them into flight mode. I shall try to explain. Enclosed is a diagram of the 787 aerial arrays. Never having flown one, I can’t verify if this is fully correct. However, the number of aerials, what they are for, and their approximate position is about right for most airliners. More in a bit. Back to the mobile phone. If you have ever left your phone on/by a stereo/TV/Speaker etc, you may well have heard the strange interference noise every so often when the phone communicates with the masts. This is electrical interference from the radio waves from the phone. Now back to the aircraft aerials. Imagine if that interference occurs through those aerials? Well, ok, a majority of them probably won’t cause grief. Even the GPS Nav is backed up by beacons and inertial reference systems. Not so bad. However, there are critical points where we might not want that to happen. For example, the Radio Altimeter (RA). This is a critical piece of equipment when close to the ground. On an automatic landing (in thick fog), the RA governs when the aircraft flares to land and when it takes power off. All at or below 50 feet! Not a time for radio interference! The RA also contributes to other aircraft logic. Yes, we are trained to react if the aircraft does something it shouldn’t - but to be honest, I’d rather not be put in that position in the first place. Incidentally, one of the many factors that caused the Turkish 737 to crash at Amsterdam was a faulty Radio Altimeter. More to it than that - but still……. So that’s why we ask you to turn your phones to flight mode before flight. If we are doing an automatic landing, we will ask you to turn your devices fully off - just in case some idiot plays around with Bluetooth!
