They had spent years shivering in concentration camps like Auschwitz, in dark cellars or hiding in the forest. When the war finally ended, they had no homes to return to and no families waiting for them.
Most of these children, numbering around 800 in total, were orphans who had emerged from the horrors of the Holocaust.
They were “broken” in ways that medicine couldn’t easily fix. These were the children of the Holocaust, young souls, who had forgotten how to smile or even how to trust a kind word. Yet, in the middle of this darkness, a small mountain village in Italy called Selvino became the setting for one of the greatest stories of hope ever told.
In 1945, a grand building known as Sciesopoli, originally built as a fascist sports academy, was transformed into a massive orphanage. It wasn’t just a shelter; it was a factory for rebuilding human spirits.
More than 800 orphans, aged from toddlers to teenagers, were gathered from the ruins of Europe and brought to this quiet corner of the Italian Alps. They arrived with hollow eyes and skeletal frames, carrying the heavy weight of being the sole survivors of their families.
Moshe Zeiri, a man who helped run the home, understood that food and medicine were not enough. He knew these children needed to feel like people again. He looked at a group of trembling boys on their first night and said,
“You are safe now. Here, no one will ever hurt you again. This is your home until we take you to our real home.”
Those simple words were the first bricks in a long wall of healing.
The routine at Selvino was designed to give the children back their dignity. They didn’t just sit and wait for help; they took part in running the house. They learned Hebrew, studied math, and practiced trades like carpentry and sewing.
Most importantly, they sang.
The hallways that once echoed with fascist chants were now filled with the melodies of children learning the songs of their ancestors.
The local Italians in the village of Selvino played a beautiful role in this recovery. Even though they were poor and had suffered through the war themselves, they didn’t turn their backs on the refugees. One local woman, who used to bring extra bread to the gates, once told a teacher,
“A hungry child is just a child. It doesn’t matter where they come from or what language they speak. They belong to all of us.”
This kindness from strangers helped the orphans realize that the world was not just made of enemies and barbed wire.
By 1948, the “Children of Selvino” began their journey to the newly formed State of Israel. They left Italy not as victims, but as pioneers.
They proved that while the war had taken their past, it could not steal their future. Today, the building of Sciesopoli stands as a silent witness to the moment humanity decided to fight back against despair.
When we open our doors and our hearts to those who have lost everything, we don’t just save their lives—we save our own humanity.

I've deleted this. It appears to be from a crypto scammer.
The governor of St Helena just told @horton_official he went outside to check on the tortoise, who was sleeping as it is past his bedtime, but he is very much alive.
I'm really sorry.

Holymoly.
