One Greek word that has never been translated well into English—in my limited understanding—is eudaimonia. It is typically translated as happiness but that word has connotations that don’t fully capture the original Greek. Eudaimonia means to be in possession of a good daimon, to house a good spirit, to live well. And in the Anglophone world, happiness is such a fleeting experience or state. It’s one of the many reasons it’s difficult to measure happiness because of how the complexities of the modern world infect and influence one’s state of being. People are lucky to feel happy or fulfilled a few times a day during the hurly burly of this technological and attention diverting dystopia. Having to pay bills, not having the money to cover said bills or being so detracted by news that does not immediately affect us unavoidably dampens our moods. And moods, which happiness happens to be one of, are sporadic and transient. We often forget that we are living beings who are lucky to be breathing in the first place. And I would argue that eudaimonia has to be embodied and nourished by the human spirit. It cannot be so easily blunted by the so called “advancement” of humanity. Just a thought.

@CollegeDems There’s a rumor that you both prevented Destiny and his fans from entering the recent convention because Hasan was petrified of them AND that there was also a planned walk out of Hasan’s speech that you prohibited from taking place. If these are true, it would mean you both kept people out of the convention and forbade people from leaving for unethical—some may say undemocratic—reasons. Care to explain?

After marinating over this for a few days, I’m now positively convinced that Tenet is Nolan’s worst film. Why? Because it is all empty mechanics with no heart. No soul. In a way, Tenet is Inception without the human motive driving it: both movies are made up mostly of exposition describing the rules of the world and the goal of its “protagonists.” However, Inception works because we are given reasons to care for Cobb’s quest to reunite with his children. We also see into his past revealing why he is prohibited from being with them and it’s emotional and human. In Tenet, however, there are no characters to care about. The main character—literally called The Protagonist—is a blank slate with no history or background. The only character with any semblance of a human connection is Kat but her story and character are so undercooked we are given no time to fully care about her circumstance. Because Nolan needs to spend more time having the “Protagonist” jumping from country to country meeting other blank slate characters or hammering us with confusing and pointless exposition dumps.  In the beginning one of the film’s NPCs—in a way the movie unravels like a bad video game—tells the “Protagonist” not to understand the rules, but feel them. Even this demand is completely thrown out the window. The film is all explaining, no feeling.

Today on his stream @JayDyer said he’s having trouble getting people to step up to debate him on these topics. I would gladly debate him on monarchy vs republicanism, but he blocked me after our little tiff about Hegel. If someone can convince him to unblock me, I’m here.

The way we believe in subjectivity today is frighteningly close to how the pre-Socratic Sophists thought of similar issues and I consider that to be a serious regression.

@colditioner Sorry, but there are weak spots here: Insomnia, The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, Tenet are weak movies.

Anyone who tells you they enjoyed Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is telling you lies. This is not an opinion. You can take this to the bank. It is not open for debate.
