this is all cool, but people shouldn't get instantly debanked from ethereum and impoverished if their governments shut down their internet. Why should they entrust their assets and wealth in defi and ethereum, for their control to be so fragile? Ethereum is a social technology it isn't limited by tech infrastructure. Can we imagine low bandwidth minimal eth meshnetworks that allow access and transaction capabilities even during a nationstate comms blackout? locally, between wallets (you can pay for your groceries in the shop), while some special nodes of the meshnetwork could have access to dedicated eth satelite internet that operates autonomously from centralised governments to guarantee onchain settlements even during shutdowns When internet is gone, that's when people need their financial freedom and user-agency-maximizing the most

Defi is a central part of the value that Ethereum provides. Financial empowerment is a central part of what it means to have agency and freedom in our current world. Finance is far from the only thing that Ethereum is good for, but it is an important thing. This post discusses how the Ethereum Foundation is approaching defi. Defi today makes the world's best savings, risk management and wealth-building opportunities permissionlessly available worldwide. We need to build on that. Ethereum's early defi era was great because it dared to dream and innovate and come up with totally new paradigms (eg. AMMs). Defi tomorrow will bring back that spirit. Don't just "make a better stablecoin", dig a layer deeper, and think about the underlying problem (risk management, hedging one's future expenses), and come up with an even better solution. But also, as the EF, we are not interested in supporting "onchain finance" or even "defi" indiscriminately. We have a specific vision of what we want to see out of defi: permissionless, open-source, private, security-first global finance that maximizes people's control over their own assets, minimizes centralized chokepoints and trusted third parties, and democratizes risk management and wealth building (the two key goals of finance according to modern portfolio theory) as well as payments. We want protocols that pass the walkaway test: that keep working even if the original team suddenly disappears without warning (or even: becomes hostile / compromised without warning). Bringing this vision to reality will inevitably take a lot of work. Defi is a complex toolchain, including various onchain components, user-side offchain components (ie. wallet, local agent...), other offchain components, etc. The things that we care about include areas like: * Improving security of defi through "traditional" means, eg. audits, standards, wallet-side safeguards * Improving security of defi through "new" means, eg. AI-assisted formal verification, user-side agents as safeguards * Oracle security and decentralization (there's A LOT of skeletons in the closet here, we as an ecosystem really need to point a big eye of sauron at it for a while) * Privacy. Both privacy-preserving payments, and privacy of more complex use cases (eg. what does it mean to have a maximally privacy-preserving CDP? there are clearly benefits in reducing liquidation-sniping risk, but it requires hard tech to get there) * Open source, and improving the licensing / forkability situation in defi Ethereum is a permissionless protocol, and nothing stops people from deploying insecure protocols, protocols that enshrine ultimately unneeded centralized trust in the name of convenience, or dopamine-maximizing gambleslop. However, we *are* interested in working with anyone aligned to make permissionless, open-source, intermediary-minimizing and security and user-agency-maximizing defi ecosystem as strong as possible, so that it can be not just individuals and institutions' first choice in Ethereum, but also a globally compelling way to manage funds for anyone who needs its properties.

Ok no, it’s not a death sentence. But it could be. If the wrong decisions are made. If Ethereum tries to compete with Tempo directly it will fail. It’s going to ship faster, be quicker and have better distribution via Stripe’s integrations. So if Ethereum tries to do normie payments and optimise the chain over time for it. Rekt. Tempo will simply make the trade offs and do the centralised regulatory capture games necessary to take payments. If it’s lucky. Tempo itself will also be competing with a plethora of other corpo chains attempting to do the same. Google, other stable slop L1s, VISA, banks, central banks are all gonna have a bash. It’s just a use case not meant for highly decentralised and permissionless architectures. So Ethereum must go the other way. It needs to become the cypherpunk chain. It needs to be programmable money. Bitcoin adjacent. Strong immutability, permissionlessness and ultimately privacy. There will be voices in the Ethereum world that want it to institutionalise. They will want to kill solo validators, go to sub-second slot times, play low latency games and concede to regulator demands. Ethereum simply cannot win on that frontier. It neither has the consensus, nor the bankroll for it. Earlier in the year I gave a talk called FORK OFF at @protocol_berg in which I made the argument that we should think about forking away from the crypto stuff that is less value aligned. Not how I imagined it to happen, but effectively this is what this is. The corpo-institutional technological trajectory is exiting Ethereum and finding its own trade off space to execute in. Good. But, Ethereum must find its own space now. It needs to hit technological vectors that the centralised chains will not. Things like hard privacy tech, decentralised stablecoins, infofinance, DAOs, agentic systems, crowdfunding, permissionless DeFi. And fundamental freedom tools we haven’t even imagined yet. Serious cryptonative cypherpunk technologies. It also has something that tempo will never have. Culture. Ethereum needs to go more subcultural and capture the mindshare of the artists, the revolutionary thinkers, the anti-corporate minded, the disaffected, the academics etc. If it plays it right it will be basically the “Bitcoin but better” asset and without the security budget time-bomb. Optimistically this might be the best thing that ever happens to Ethereum, but it must go its own way to win.

hot take: Tempo is bearish for ETH. Stripe & Paradigm may have just given Ethereum its death sentence

@innerpathing Started loving my mom more. Understanding and admiring her. She was the default domestic labor parent and was great at cleaning, I found it annoying, but as an adult realized she was keeping us all alive and healthy. Now I feel like my mother's daughter when I clean, it's cute.

@ameensol projects in the space, yet the work environment in the industry at large and public sphere is really hard to wrangle. I hope we reduce the harrassment in this space as time goes on, while still maintaining free speech and no out of bounds stifling personal social media policies

My preliminary thoughts on the Pertsev verdict in this thread. I'm sad for Alexey and angry that the money laundering laws in the Netherlands have such a low threshold for intent, essentially mere negligence. Nothing in this ruling should prejudice or carry weight in Roman Storm's case in the SDNY. In America we have stricter intent standards for money laundering and stronger First Amendment and due process protections. I hope Alexey can fight this on appeal. Privacy is normal and inventing tools to help people protect their privacy is a basic right.
Peter Van Valkenburgh@valkenburgh

Some of this would be highly questionable under US constitutional law. Unlike in the SDNY case that focuses primarily on ongoing activities of the defendants the Dutch ruling seems to come straight out and say that you can be criminally responsible merely for inventing a cryptosystem. Note that I am not an expert in Dutch law and this is a machine generated transalation:
