[@marca]

Brilliant lineup, man. Seven changes. YES. I get not starting a natural creator = we've got Doku and Savinho out wide, both of them wide playmakers and creators in their own right. No issue there. Defence is solid. No natural fullbacks, which makes sense given the setup. Khusanov at right-back for his pace and recovery, especially in transition. Guehi alongside Dias. O'Reilly at left-back... or will he drift into midfield in possession? Either way, he adds an edge there. Having Rodri and Bernardo is just massive. Control, tempo-setting, momentum, rhythm = everything flows through them. Feels balanced. Bench is stacked with game-changers too. We can win this. 💙

@City_Xtra @rayan_cherki And then you see the amount of potential G/A he delivers every time he is playing, and the team is butchering the finishes (haaland first)

Pep Guardiola: “Always I want @rayan_cherki's talent, give this to us! But all I ask is play 10 metres up front. Talent close to Rodri? I don’t care. Close to Erling! "How did the first goal come [vs Nottingham Forest]? Him. The assist from Rayan Ait-Nouri at Leeds? He’s close to the box. Live there. Do whatever you want, but live close to there, because he’s unique. He likes to go a little deep. But he’s young. "But the numbers and impact in the first season in the Premier League has been massive. I’m delighted for what he gives us, how he’s trying..." [via @HaytersTV]

@rezich Actually you are right, I used parasocial but that's not the right word. I wanted to mean a relationship where the parties never meet physically

@LokoHS How can the game be “about parasocial relationships” when the central focus of the game is a bidirectional relationship that is most certainly not parasocial in any way whatsoever?

The thing that ruined Firewatch for me (playing it immediately upon release) was when I realized about an hour into the game that the ludic vocabulary¹ it'd established meant that there was zero chance I was going to encounter another character face-to-face in the game. The art was beautiful and the woods were fun to explore, but it became glaringly obvious that I'd never see another character in the game²—because for that to happen, there would have to be character animations (body and face) that would sell them as people, on par with how the voice acting was doing the same. But once it became apparent that, behind the pretty colors and expansive-seeming game world that they let you wander around, that there was nothing more ambitious waiting in store (long before the plot pulled the rug out from under you (in a way that I just simply cannot find a way to appreciate, even a decade later—unlike, say, Metal Gear Solid 2, Danganronpa V3, etc.)). This completely killed all of the “slow-burn” building tension and drama for me, especially with regards to Delilah. Once I realized I was never going to see her face-to-face, all the pretension to the contrary made everything ring hollow—especially once time starts skipping ahead, and Henry still hasn't met her yet, even though her watchtower was only just a bit further away than the playable game world you're permitted to explore. I still have no idea whether this is something that people who haven't spent their whole lives making video games and playing them from that perspective would notice, consciously or otherwise. Maybe not? I don't know. Regardless, around that time in my playthrough, it had also become painfully obvious that this was one of those games where no choices you make matter at all whatsoever. That's mostly fine—linear walking simulators are a known quantity, and if that's all this game was, and I knew that going in, I would've accepted it on those terms. But I thought I had seen something in preview footage³ indicating that there was something like a dynamic system in place that tracked all the little things you were doing, and would somehow subtly affect how the story unfolded. Maybe I was just completely mistaken, or maybe they scrapped that at some point in development—who knows? But either way, there was nothing systemically interesting in the game at all whatsoever—it was almost entirely linear, with only a few (if I remember correctly) small different things that could happen, exclusively depending upon which dialogue-wheel choices you picked. (And some of those were nice, for what they were!) But the game wants you to think that it has something bigger going on under the hood—they tease you with stuff like litter you can pick up, various optional encounters you can find—but none of it has any bearing on any tangible outcome in the end. It's just a static world with some useless physics props in it and some trigger volumes that advance the story. Firewatch was probably the last of that specific Fullbright-style linear-narrative walking simulator I played—the disappointment I experienced playing it, relative to my expectations for it, kind of killed the genre for me. I kept hoping for someone to try something more ambitious with the format, and I had hoped that Firewatch would be that game. But in the end—believe it or not—I think I like Gone Home more. And that's saying something. ¹ Apologies for the pretentious-sounding term, but this is a real thing. ² The jump-scare and the firefighter at the end don't count. ³ Probably on Giant Bomb (RIP).
JFJ🇺🇸@jifferey

My favorite part of the slow burn game was the unsatisfying ending and the murder mystery with no payoff and the developers who were DMCA'ing creators they didnt like. Firewatch is another GONE HOME situation where the ambience, setting, and theme were promising but had such a bad payoff it makes the entire process irrelevant. What im hearing is all it takes is 10 years for people to think your game is great. The forest was beautifully crafted with its ambience and atmosphere that wasnt captured yet at its release. The genuine fear and paranoia of knowing theres someone else in the woods causing trouble. Only to find out youre alone the entire game and you had nothing to worry about and the woman on the radio wanted nothing to do with you. You may have forgotten but I didnt.
