J&K govt earned ₹2152 crore from liquor shop auctions in just 2 years, yet talks about “Nasha Mukti” drives. If drugs and addiction are really a concern, then who gave these liquor licenses in the first place? You can’t promote alcohol sales and fight addiction at the same time.

@huzaifnazeer What is happening in Kashmir today says a lot about the need to teach our boys and men to respect a girl’s consent, dignity, choices, and boundaries. Instead of just “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,” we should also focus on “Beta Padhao, Betiyan Bachao.”

@SyedJunaidHsmi We all saw how @ArvindKejriwal worked in Delhi under LG rule and how he protested even to get files signed for the people. But we haven’t seen that in J&K. Maybe all the files are getting cleared, or maybe the government is just fooling people by blaming the LG for interference.

The argument that “LG is the real CM, @OmarAbdullah is merely de-jure CM and LoP @Sunil_SharmaBJP is the de-facto CM” may sound politically catchy but constitutionally, it is an oversimplification and administratively a dangerous argument. J&K is a Union Territory with a legislature not Union Territory without an elected government. Section-53 of J&K Reorganisation Act-2019 clearly states that there shall be a Council of Ministers consisting of not more than 10 percent of the total number of members in the Legislative Assembly with Chief Minister at the head to aid and advise Lieutenant Governor in the exercise of his functions in relation to matters with respect to which the Legislative Assembly has power to make laws except in so far as he is required by or under this Act to act in his discretion or by or under any law to exercise any judicial or quasi-judicial functions. Furthermore, Transaction of Business Rules-2020, envision a functioning executive structure where departments, ministers, Chief Secretary and Chief Minister form part of a coherent chain of governance and decision-making not mere ceremonial spectators. Yes, unlike a full-fledged state, J&K’s elected government does not control certain subjects such as police and public order and LG retains specific discretionary powers. However, the elected government still exercises substantial authority over large areas of administration: development, health, education, public works, power, local governance and day-to-day executive functioning. Existing structure clearly grants powers to CM and his Council of Ministers within a defined framework. The real question is whether those powers are being exercised effectively. If more than 1,000 officers transferred by the democratically elected government are not listening to their controlling heads, then to whom exactly are they answerable? If more than 1,000 engineers transferred through official orders are not responsive to ministerial directives, then what institutional mechanism is enforcing accountability? Chief Minister in a Union Territory cannot repeatedly invoke structural limitations as a permanent defense against accountability. Governance is not merely about possessing powers on paper; it is about asserting constitutional authority, ensuring compliance within the system and making the administrative machinery answerable to the people. People of Jammu and Kashmir have given massive mandate to National Conference and elected a government to govern not to explain why governance is difficult? Those who believe the elected government is powerless would do a great service to J&K if they could cite even a single instance where an administrative decision taken by the NC-led Government has been reversed by the @OfficeOfLGJandK @manojsinha_. Moreover, why would a constitutionally constrained government order massive reshuffles in departments infamous for being breeding grounds of “transfer dukandari”? This very action demonstrates executive’s commitment to institutional accountability and administrative reform actions that would be meaningless if the government truly lacked executive authority. The answer lies not in constitutional theory but in institutional practice either the government exercises its powers and is held accountable for the results or it concedes the premises of those who claim it possesses none.

@ZafarChoudhary_ Honestly, it feels like journalism in this state is dead now. Only a few journalists are left who report with honesty, carry credibility in their words, are not sold out, and remain true to their profession by helping people instead of bootlicking those in power.

In the first sight I thought this is BJP leader and LoP Sunil Sharma’s statement. Then I realised Greater Kashmir has editorialised @OmarAbdullah’s leave from office as absence of government. I know we don’t have the best government that we deserve but by this logic functions of the government of India and many states should have been outsourced long ago.

@jkpdp Oh my goodness ma’am, when your party was in government in J&K, your finance minister said banning alcohol would affect the budget and that drinking alcohol or not should be a matter of personal freedom and individual choice.

@Vikasamiinn @JKNC_ @jkpdp is hypocritical too. In opposition, they talk about banning liquor, but in power they hide behind “freedom of choice.” Today @JKNC_ blames PDP, PDP blames JKNC, and meanwhile J&K’s youth suffers. Both parties are responsible for this mess.

A reminder to the people of the motherland about the trio of the Abdullah clan heading the @JKNC_ & their love for the money that has flowed from alcohol since 1975. SHEIKH ABDULLAH: As the CM of J&K in 1977, he rejected the idea of an alcohol ban even when the PM of India was interested in banning it. His reason: “Alcohol gives us money.” FAROOQ ABDULLAH: As CM, he upheld his father’s legacy and refused every call for a ban. His reason never changed: “Alcohol gives us money.” OMAR ABDULLAH: As CM, he carries his father’s and grandfather’s legacy forward. His reason: “Alcohol gives us money” and he further added: “Whoever drinks, will drink. We aren’t dragging anyone to liquor shops.” The NC as a political party in J&K has inherently & always been insensitive to Muslim identity, Muslim feelings & Muslim aspirations, despite ruling the region with a more than 95% Muslim population from decades. Three chief ministers from the JKNC who have ruled a Muslim-majority region for over 50 years, and they still rule today, while the people pay the price. This family buried our religio-cultural ethos, buried our livelihoods, and buried everything we held dear. The laughter is not on them, but on us. Introspect!

Tomorrow, the Hon’ble LG of J&K will visit Kupwara to promote the “Drug-Free Kupwara” campaign. However, I would respectfully like to point out to @manojsinha_ ji that liquor is being sold openly within a 1 km radius of the venue itself. Then what is the point of such campaigns?

You can say they were wrong at that time when alcohol was normalized in the name of “freedom of choice.” But u can still impose a ban on alcohol. You are just playing the blame game while the people of J&K are suffering in between. Shameful political parties.
JKNC@JKNC_

Shame that the PDP, which called alcohol consumption a “freedom of choice” in 2016 and introduced an Excise Policy in 2017 making tehsils and municipalities the basis for determining unreserved areas, now has the audacity to sermonize others.

@pzfahad He wasn't invited last time either, so there is nothing new about this. We all know he will leave the party before the 2029 LS elections. He may contest the assembly elections independently, form a new party, or skip the assembly elections entirely to focus only on the LS.

@Gaamuk Why should we stay away from politics when politicians decide everything? We should question and challenge them, not avoid them. We’ve already seen shifts like DMK losing in Tamil Nadu, dynastic politics won’t last forever, people eventually demand change.
