Looney's Razor
@Looneys_Razor
The personality observable in Shakespeare's work is altogether out of relationship with what is taught of the reputed author and the facts of his career.

@wordorigins My mate Oming invented that joke.
Wyoming? It is TERRIBLE.

@deveresocietyuk 1.5 to 2.5 decades later, Stratford man arrives in London. Acquires this book & the playscript of Ur-Hamlet & writes a masterpiece.
Or maybe the whole "Ur" theory is just an invention to cover the obviously chronological problem for Stratfordians.
English

On 1 January 1572 Thomas Bedingfield dedicated to de Vere his translation from Italian to English of Cardanus' Comfort. Often known as 'Hamlet's Book', it contains a prefatory letter by de Vere warmly commending his friend's work.

@alacrates @AldousAsterion As for the identification of Cardano's Comforte as the book in Hamlet, see: #metadata_info_tab_contents" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">jstor.org/stable/3818164…
Incidentally, it would already be 20-25 yrs old when Stratford man gets to London. One wonders how he happened upon a copy of it AND the play script of "Ur-Hamlet".
Sarcasm off.
English

@AldousAsterion I've been coming across the figure of Cardano recently - he corresponded with Descartes, and I noticed that Oxford commissioned a work of Cardano's to be translated into English - don't quite understand it yet, but some call this "Hamlet's book" apparently
English

Starting around 1:44: In V&A, blood creates the meleagris flower. It is iconic of Oxford. It is AKA narcissus, linking it to SOTON. And the meleagris genus of birds includes a species called Penelope.
All purely coincidental, I am sure.

@PouncerNC @deveresocietyuk He is such a ridiculous troll, and will say absolutely anything, no matter how random or nonsensical, in hopes of getting a response. Sad, really. My enjoyment of Twitter doubled the day I muted him.

Pity there isn't a souvenir wool carder.
British Souvenirs@souvenirstoress
The thimble commemorates Shakespeare and his hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon. They are also very useful gifts for sewers or embroiderers Buy Now: britishsouvenirs.co.uk/collections/sh… #gift #Souvenirs #Souvenir2021 #ShakespeareSunday #Trending

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo No, I mean the sonnets referencing self-effacement. Read them.
FFS: because he wanted to publish it under a witty pseudonym instead.
I am tired of your disingenuousness.
Good bye.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo You mean the stuff about how shameful it is being an actor? Sure. I'm giving you that one - I'm asking why he wouldn't circulate Lucrece as Sidney had. Or better still, leak it to be pirated. But you're really gonna find and pay a well-known actor to pretend to be you?
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Maybe there were more important things going on in 1650.
Everyone personally involved being dead could also be a factor.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Also Razor, the thing that still puzzles me is why in 1650 no-one came forward, even as Shax was sliding into obscurity for reasons of snobbery - because of the eternal shame of Oxford actually writing good poetry? What was the motivation for protecting the secret by then?
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Acquaint yourself with the Sonnets, especially those dealing with self-effacement.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Why would you circulate bad poetry, while letting Shax become one of the most famous poets in the land (again, see Parnassus)? You could just leak it to publishers. (I know the pirated version was after Sidney's death - that's an example of how it could work).
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo FFS: Nothing by Sidney was published in his lifetime.
Whatever "leak them to publishers under his name" is supposed to mean, I can't image why you think that is an obvious thing to do instead of using a clever, witty pseudonym.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo No no, my question is, why wouldn't de Vere just leak them to publishers under his name? Happened all the time. Sidney etc were known thru pirated versions. Why didn't he at least circulate Lucrece privately instead of his absolutely terrible juvenile works?
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo But Sidney is mentioned by contemporary critics as being one of the great poets of the age. Why wouldn't de Vere put his name to V&A or Lucrece, which were the things that Shax actually became known for? He certainly put his name to some pretty poor poems.
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo I cannot cope with your duplicity.
Sidney became a "national hero" by dying, so it has nothing to do with him letting others read his work.
And he published nothing.
And as you know, de Vere did circulate his work in select circles, including having it performed at court.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo That one was autocorrect - but Sidney was a national hero who let his works circulate widely in his own name. Why didn't De Vere? Also: by 1650 Shax was a distant third fav behind Jonson & Fletcher, attacked for not having their learning. Why wasn't the cat let out the bag then?
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo And making William Shakespeare a motely to the view would have been anti-theatre.
By "Sydney", so you mean Philip Sidney? He published nothing. It wasn't done. And he was on a very low rung of the aristocracy.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo But Eliz James and Charles were all pretty pro-theatre. I've heard the shame argument before (Lyly & Beaumont were pretty posh, and apparently De Vere did write plays according to contemporary praise anyway) but why wouldn't he put his name to narrative poems as Sydney had done?
English

@Looneys_Razor @omniadeo @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton But also, why didn't de Vere take credit for Lucrece? Is it possible to imagine someone who had written his terrible poetry writing Lear? Finally, why would he settle for Shax getting rich & famous while he declined into poverty & disgrace?
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo They - the two kings you mentions.
cherised entertainments - the plays of Shakespear.
made motley to the view - brought into disrepute to the amusement of common folk.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Could you be more specific? Actually, if you could link me to a website that explains *your* view - you must remember a lot of anti-Stratfordians believe different things - then I promise I'll read it.
English

@sammy_mendel @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Because they did not want one of their cherished entertainments made a motley to the view.
English

@Looneys_Razor @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @omniadeo Okay cool, let's start with that then. Why did King James and Charles I wish that de Vere's name be protected? Why did De Vere write bad poetry, not take credit for V&A and die poor and disgraced while the Stratfordian benefited?
English

@sammy_mendel @omniadeo @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton "Why did they have to code it"
Because that is what de Vere wanted, and after his death, that is what the King and the Herberts wanted.
English

@omniadeo @PouncerNC @SmileyBlanton @Looneys_Razor Well Jonson, in between ripping on Shax, never says to Drummond, 'oh yeah, and he was actually the Earl of Oxford'. Why not? Also, what is a single, strong expression of contemporary doubt? Why did they have to code it, given De Vere's poverty and disgrace (and death)?
English
