Today I sat down with my CPA to discuss the tax implications of foreign currencies when they revalue. In Don't Blow the Blessing (link in comments), I covered this at length. The relevant tax code, a list of questions to ask your CPA, and an email template so you're not scrambling when the day comes. When I told him I hold VND and IQD (notice I said VND first), and walked him through the path to revaluation, he got excited. I told him I'm expecting a taxable event and I want him prepared. His initial assumption was capital gains. Then he looked at IRC §988. Default treatment under §988 is ordinary income, not capital gains, regardless of how long you've held the position. There is a path to capital gains treatment, but there's a catch: the election must be made in writing before close of business on the day you entered the position. Retroactive elections don't work. If you've held IQD or VND for years with no election on file, ordinary income is the presumed default. Moving forward, I plan to make that election on the day I purchase. (Note: I am not a CPA, financial advisor, fiduciary, or attorney. This is a conversation I had as an investor with my own CPA. Work with one.) Have you had this conversation with your CPA yet?
