I doubt she knows where Newcastle is, never mind such intricacies as spelks...and turnips. I am currently cleaning the house ahead of her arrival.
Len Eschle@FelixLongbrook

@JHCPAL Will she pass the spelk test? I fear it could be crucial.

@ColinYoung_1 @JHCPAL That's right. We also played a similar game called "kick the can" where we all hid then ran out to kick a tin down the lane before being tagged.

I'm asking......
Paul Lynch@pd_lynch

@JHCPAL @TyneSnapper You should ask people what they called the game where one person is 'on'. They stand at lamppost and count to 30. Other players hide. When person finds someone they run back to lamppost and call it out. For those players hiding, they have to reach the lamppost first to be 'free'

@Terry94023972 The 1966 match wasn't a very pleasant experience with no segregation, your mam was a wise woman.

Or, to use another dialect word ....tice. Rhymes with dice. What do you do with a spelk? Tice it out. OED. Obsolete except dialect. To entice, induce, attract. Probably French.
John Regan 💙@John_Regan_

@JHCPAL My Mam would use a pin to remove the skin around a spelk to remove it. It would knack!

#OTD in 1944, RAF gunner Nicholas Alkemade fell 18,000 ft from his burning Lancaster bomber without a parachute. He survived thanks to pine trees & snow.

I use splinter down here ( I'm in the SE) , though revert to spelk when I'm in the homeland. Perhaps, like Phillip, I should start a mini resistance movement behind enemy lines & use spelk.🤔. Every little helps !
Philip Patterson@TheAgentPhil

@JHCPAL Have always used spelk because my parents were Geordie emigres who moved down south. Met with blank looks down here. They still use skelf in Scotland so there is an ally over the Wall against the relentless march of the splinter.
