Did you know? In 1887, in Korçë, the very first Albanian-language school in the Ottoman Empire was allowed to open. At the time, there were already four Greek elementary schools and one greek gymnasium operating in the same area.
To get permission for just this one school, albanians had to leverage the influence of prominent figures like Sami Frashëri and Naim Frashëri. Ultimately, the Sultan decreed that only ONE albanian-language school would be permitted for the 2.4 million people living across the four Albanian vilayets.
By 1902, this school faced severe suppression. The push to close it was driven by Ottoman fears of rising Albanian nationalism, in coordination with the Greek Orthodox Church, which opposed the spread of the albanian language.
Meanwhile, across the sea, the arbëreshë in Italy had a wealth of albanian institutions supported by Italian authorities. There was even an albanian language chair at the Vatican that opened in the 17th century! This early academic focus actually established albanian grammatical studies as the first among the Balkan peoples in 1716 — ahead of serbian, greek, or bulgarian grammars.

Calling sicanje an exclusively Croatian tradition oversimplifies a much older and broader Balkan heritage. Edith Durham documented these tattoo practices extensively among Albanians , both Catholic and Muslim, where solar symbols, crosses, and protective motifs formed part of an ancient cultural continuum that long predates modern national identities. Some Catholic communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina preserved those traditions as well, while Durham herself noted that such practices were absent among Orthodox Serbs or Muslim Slavs. Reducing this complex heritage to a single modern nationality erases the deeper historical reality of the Balkans. These symbols belong to a shared pre-modern cultural layer of the region, one especially well preserved among Albanians and Croats of Bosnia and Herzegovina. #history #balkans #strabo
