If liberal Catholics can learn to deal with their political/moral values being inconsistent with Church doctrine, so can conservative Catholics. Telling the Pope he doesn’t understand the religion he leads is quite a move.

@lukeradel That’s not it, and regardless the district lines don’t explain several decades of electoral trends from the precinct-level on up. Now Rep. Mannion originally won a Senate seat that WAS gerrymandered to benefit Republicans yet became competitive over time because of these shifts.

Central NY’s slow but steady shift to the left over the past few decades should be studied. For a while as it transitioned, ticket splitting between Presidential Dems and House/state leg Rs was common. Now it’s pretty reliably Dem.

These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are alive and well: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs likely to lose 2026, and Trump is very unpopular, not a magical exception.

As damaged as the national Democratic brand might be, the party allows candidates to distance themselves from that brand and run locally-tailored races. Trump is the GOP brand and demands absolute fealty, putting Republican candidates in swing areas in an impossible position.
