The TMC and the DMK, two govt that were projected as champions of democracy, were actually the most repressive when it came to criticism. The slightest expression of dissent against Mamata or Stalin could make you fear an FIR. From my own experience, it has always been far easier to criticise Modi; no police will come after you. Only in cases of repeated, severe insult or abuse might some BJP functionary act against you. The same latitude simply doesn't exist under many state govt. And yes, this includes some BJP-ruled states as well, but in my assessment, the most intolerant and vindictive were Mamata and Stalin. To be honest, I always hesitated before writing against them for one reason: fear. Glad both are gone.
