Decades ago, we published a paper demonstrating the accuracy of phylogenetic analysis in a fast-evolving virus (Hillis et al., 1992. Science 255:589-592). Reviewers questioned the relevance of a viral phylogeny. Perhaps they understand now?

While procrastinating today, I've discovered this researcher who happens to be an excellent blogger as well, @StephenBHeard. Didn't have the chance to read either of his books but surely something to do in the future!

#FossilFriday Conodonts are tiny fossils typically less than a millimetre in size. First discovered in 1856, their origin remained obscure until the 1980s when they were shown to be the teeth of extinct chordates slightly more advanced than hagfish. #100Fossils @odealab

HUGELY EXCITING! A cave bear carcass has been recovered from the permafrost on an Arctic island - “the first and only find of its kind.” The preservation is remarkable; all internal organs are present. And that nose! Wonderful 📷 NEFU siberiantimes.com/other/others/n…

So proud of @ananth_srinivas for passing his PhD proposal and coming up with a super cool project on cranial form and biomechanics in eels and limbless tetrapods! Time to start doing some amazing science! 🥳🎉🐍

Congrats to @SamCoatham and colleagues for their new paper on Titanichthys foraging, giving support for suspension feeding in giant Devonian placoderms. Sam asked to borrow my Titanichthys #paleoart for the PR - only cropped versions have been released online until now.
Rob Sansom🐟@Sansom_Rob

Large filter feeding fishies were at in the Paleaozoic too! Toothless placoderm Titanichthys was likely hoovering up plankton in the Devonian. Well done @ICALmanchester PhD student @SamCoatham on publishing his @BristolPalaeo master's research. @RSocPublishing Open Science
