Often when people complained about cancel culture, censorious lefties would trot out this xkcd comic. With journalists like @taylorlorenz suspended by Musk, can we stop using xkcd's shallow argument? A culture of free speech is more than just preventing government censorship.

@DiluvialChatter It works the exact same as email. Your "instance" is just whatever comes after the @. It doesn't restrict who you interact with. Try it! The adjustment really isn't too bad.

@mmasnick How do you deal with the multiple instances? Is there a way? Or is distribution just fragmented and that’s that?

@ByronsBoatswain @ScottGreenfield Mastodon is decentralized. Each server has its own rules. If you don't like the rules of one server (or how they're applied), you can just move on to a new server with a whole new slate of moderators. And the moderators and server hosts are volunteers, not employees.

@ScottGreenfield I'm sure these rules will be applied in a neutral way, fair to every person, and will never be subject to the political and other biases of Mastodon employees or the users. For example, obviously communism is a violent ideology, so I'm sure it's banned across Mastodon. /sarc
