🚨 Small Boat Crossings: A Fundamental Shift in UK Asylum Small boat crossings were almost unheard of before 2018. Since then, they have become one of the main routes into the UK’s asylum system. Key facts: • Nearly 197,000 people were detected arriving by small boat between 2018 and March 2026. • Around 95% of those arriving claimed asylum. • In the year ending March 2026, small boat arrivals accounted for 42% of all asylum claims made in the UK. These figures show how dramatically the asylum system has changed in just a few years. A route that barely existed before 2018 now represents a substantial proportion of asylum claims, placing increasing demands on processing, accommodation and support services.
