Johann Wolfgang von Goethe died on this day in 1832. His influence is still very much with us today in theatres and opera houses throughout the world. During a visit to Lucerne it was fascinating to see this building where the great man actually stayed!

How about this for a welcome - a prisoner saint holding his shackles and a saint with his bowels on a stick? Not the greeting you might expect but welcome to a medieval church with wall paintings. Duxford is famous for its graphic images - are you ready to visit & explore them?

The 15th century saw great changes at St John's, not least the addition of a grand chancel roof. Most of the church's windows also date from that era, as well as the north aisle and its many wall paintings.

No.10 - the absolute classic that is St. John’s, Duxford. I like the rustic nature of the pews and they feel right in that incredible space 🤩

February 5th is the Feast Day of St Agatha. This Sicilian martyr was tortured by having her breasts removed. This medieval wall painting at Duxford, St John the Baptist, Cambridgeshire depicts the event.

There is a new charity in Duxford which will look after fundraising for specific projects at St John's Church and nearby St Peter's Church. You can follow @duxfordchurches on their own account and receive updates on their events this year and beyond.

The north aisle was the last major addition to St John's church in the mid 15th century. It was once filled with pews but is now a free passage to observe the wall paintings. Today, it is used regularly for events and exhibitions, the next being May 3 & 4 - info to follow!

Another sunny morning in Duxford and the start to what feels like the first day of spring. Inside St John's, it's bright and perfect for photography, so why not come over and get those shots you've always wanted.

It's the fifth Sunday in Lent today, the start of Passiontide, and so the purple covers go on. Just five of the veiled statues at St Mary, Ipswich this morning.
