My sister and I have been very busy this week. We have begun the extremely labor intense process of tapping our maple trees. On our property we have about 200 mature trees and and 100 juvenile trees. Some of the juvenile trees are are almost ready to be tapped but not yet. Maybe next year? You can tell when they are almost ready when they start leaking. The squirrels will also tell you. They go up the trees and lick the sweet sap that oozes from the primary crotch of the tree. Only a true first generation American Maple willl leak sap like this: This is one of our heritage Maple trees. Its parent tree is still living and is over 200 years old. I have been grafting more trees off of the parent. And we have about 50 infant trees growing in our nursery. When you tap a maple you hammer in a metal tap into the base and you hang a bucket from the tap. The sap drips into the bucket and you need to check the buckets about every two weeks or so. I love working these maple trees because I can feel their life force and I know that they can feel me when I’m near them. I get a sense of excitement and positive energy from them.
