Good morning from Virginia. 🇺🇸 “If electricity can be made visible in any part of a circuit, intelligence may be transmitted instantaneously by it.” — Samuel F. B. Morse (1832) On this day May 24th, in 1844, Samuel F.B. Morse sent the first official telegraph message in history from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, Maryland. The historic words — “What hath God wrought” — were tapped out in Morse code over a 40-mile telegraph line and received by his partner Alfred Vail. The message, taken from the Bible (Numbers 23:23), marked the dramatic birth of instantaneous long-distance communication. What had once taken days by horse or train could now happen in seconds. This breakthrough would transform commerce, journalism, railroads, and how Americans stayed connected across a growing nation. It was the beginning of the Information Age, long before telephones, radio, or the internet. Here’s to the visionaries who shrank distances and expanded possibility. America 250 🇺🇸
