Set against the final tense years of the Cold War in West Germany (1987–1989), this book recounts my experiences as a specialist in the 72nd Field Artillery Brigade at Peden Barracks. From the vibrant nights at the Rockpalast—where a glowing neon Volkswagen Bug hung above the dance floor—to the silent, high-security world of an underground communications vault, the story traces an unexpected path marked by duty, suspicion, and personal revelation. A chance meeting on New Year’s Eve 1987 with Claudia, a woman who presented herself as a French elementary school teacher on Leighton Barracks, gradually revealed layers of deception. What seemed like an ideal relationship became the focus of counterintelligence scrutiny, leading to the loss of my security clearance and a new, covert role as a ‘professional listener.’ Through vivid accounts of lonely Monday runs across VII Corps, unsettling encounters on alert, and the weight of unspoken secrets, the narrative culminates with my presence at the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989—a historic moment witnessed while carrying burdens few around me could imagine. This memoir is written primarily for my children and family, so they may fully understand the realities of those years. It concludes with a message of forgiveness and gratitude, acknowledging the complex humanity beneath the era’s shadows. The book is now available for purchase on Kindle Direct Publishing.
