I want to go on record before tonight’s final to talk about just how brutal this really is - and some of the nuances that casual fans forget. First off, altitude is a silent assassin. It hits people differently, but it always hits. And size makes it worse - the bigger you are, the faster your body files a complaint with HR. Second, everyone assumes these competitors train like Olympians all season. They don’t. They can’t. There’s never enough time between dailies, eliminations, or injuries to get consistent runs in. Even when it feels like there might be time, half of that time you might be going into elimination that night so no one can truly workout. Most of them probably squeezed in five halfway decent 45-minute treadmill jogs over three months. So to the marathoners side-eyeing this final safely from their supershoes: when was the last time you took three months off and then decided to run a marathon at altitude, on no sleep, eating mystery granola bars from production? I'm not saying you couldn't do it, you likely could. I'm just saying this is not a normal marathon, conditions, or lead up. Then there’s the pacing nightmare. They’re never told how long the final is. Not even an estimate. It could be a ten-hour “sprint” or a three-day death march. You can’t strategize around that. Go too slow and you lose. Go too fast and you gas out with no sleep, no food, and whatever water you can fight Turbo for. Sometimes a gas out doesn't mean they're in the worst shape, it means they made a poor strategic decision; which is tough to criticize because they had no data to make a good strategic decision.  On paper, thirty-ish miles doesn’t sound catastrophic - until you realize they’re doing it with intermittent games designed to break them, uneven terrain, serious elevation gain, and outfits better suited for a CrossFit Instagram post than survival. At home, you have your shoes, your plan, your weather app, and the comforting presence of a nearby hospital. Here, the “medical tent” is a guy named Steve with a clipboard. It makes it kinda hard, and stupid, to push yourself to the brink of death. All that said, yeah...the vets could’ve come in better shape. But given that, this final isn’t as bad as it could be. And no one’s quit yet, which might be the biggest shock of all.  #TheChallenge41
