My favorite World Cup still remains the 2002 Korea/Japan tournament because I watched almost all the matches and there were so many crazy moments. However, my most memorable World Cup moment to date came in the following edition: Germany 2006.
The Netherlands vs Portugal round-of-16 match will be remembered for years because of the chaos and drama it produced. If there is a football match that could have caused a full-blown war, it was that one.
It was so intense that it produced a record 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards. It was later termed the "Battle of Nuremberg."
With a place in the quarter-finals at stake and little to nothing between the two nations in terms of quality and talent, both teams believed they could reach the quarter-finals at the expense of the other.
Although there was a yellow card shown to a Dutch player in the early minutes, the tackle that sent Cristiano Ronaldo off the pitch in tears was probably what sparked the real tension.
The rest of the game saw tackles flying left, right, and center, with the referee separating the opposing players issuing yellow cards at every opportunity.
As ugly as the game was, it had a beautiful moment at the end: Deco and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, both sent off during the match, were seen chatting near the tunnel. Although their facial expressions showed they hadn’t enjoyed every incident that led to the red cards, one wonders — could they have been chatting about what they could do to prevent further escalation after the final whistle?
World Cup moments are always memorable, and all football fans are eagerly anticipating what 2026 has in store for us, with the tournament just days away.
