Rest in peace, Ryan Burke. I don’t yet know all the details, but I’m hearing that you were shot and killed Sunday night in Columbia, Missouri, while I was out of town. It’s shocking and deeply saddening, and my heart is heavy processing the news. Please pray for Ryan’s mother, his family, and his friends. To my knowledge, he passed unmarried and without children. I knew Ryan for about 13 or 14 years, and for a time, roughly between 2012 and 2016, we were close. He was a Marine and a Christian, a man who served abroad and was involved in anti–human trafficking efforts. I hadn’t seen him in years, but I ran into him just a couple of weeks ago, which makes this loss feel even more surreal. I don’t know exactly what happened, but what I’m hearing is that he was shot and killed and that several people are in custody. Whatever the full story turns out to be, this is a tragic and senseless loss of life that should never have happened. In light of what continues to happen in this city, Columbia Mayor Buffaloe should resign. And not just her. Multiple politicians should step down. Enough with the excuses. It may not be completely her fault, but she is the mayor, and leadership in Columbia must own the explosion of violence and violent death happening here. Accountability starts at the top, and this city deserves better. This is about responsibility, not politics or deflection. When public safety deteriorates and lives continue to be lost, leaders cannot hide behind talking points, studies, or promises of future action. Real leadership means acknowledging failure, making hard decisions, and being willing to step aside when the city is clearly not moving in the right direction. The people of Columbia deserve leadership that treats this crisis with urgency, seriousness, and resolve. This photo is from 2013, taken directly after we attended the Christmas Eve service at the Newman Center in Columbia. It’s how I’ll remember him: a moment of peace, faith, and brotherhood.
