I have always thought I was empathetic. I now believe true empathy is impossible - it is an illusion to think you understand what goes on in someone else's brain.

As these examples suggest, "What's been around for a long time, but has never been good enough to take seriously?" is a good heuristic for predicting important new developments. When people have been trying to do something for a long time, there's usually a reason.

A rant on grants:
I have applied 3 times for an @arc_gov_au FF – all unsuccessful.
I was confident on 2 of these, naively the first time (one of my first grants ever written). And then again when I was more senior and had a good track record.
