@HennieValkenier @rob_elmes @MaynoothChem Thanks Hennie! We're still in the early stages of the project at the moment, pKa determination is coming up soon. I'd reckon that the pKa is slightly less than regular squaramides due to the carbonyl stabilising the conjugate base. No evidence yet, of course, just a hunch!

@lmartinezcrespo @rob_elmes @MaynoothChem I've been trying to grow crystals of the host:guest complex so we can do some x-ray crystallography to determine this. No success so far in obtaining crystals, but I'm continuing to try! (2/2)

@lmartinezcrespo @rob_elmes @MaynoothChem Hi Luis! It is definitely possible there is some intramolecular H-bonding affecting the anion binding. I'd guess that the conformation I have depicted in the poster is different than what's what is actually going on. (1/2)

@TABarendt - the squaramide would pick back up a H from the H2O, reversing the deprotonation. However, as water is a competitive H-bond donor for anions, the binding affinity would likely decrease in the presence of water! Thanks for your questions 😊(3/3)

@TABarendt Chloride is basic enough to form a strong interaction but not basic enough to deprotonate. The size of Cl- is complementary to the binding site, also! If water was added the risk of deprotonation would *probably* be lessened due to H2O being a protic solvent (2/3)

Some more great results from the Elmes' Group! Can't wait to see what else Luke helps to produce over the next four years 👨‍🔬

Hi All! I'm delighted to be able to present a poster for vMASC 2020, highlighting some recent work from our group @rob_elmes - on Self-assembling Amphiphilic squaramides. Feel free to ask any questions regarding the work! hope you enjoy (poster 21) #vMASCposter #LoveIrishResearch
