People keep saying “citizen” only means a corporation or legal fiction while ignoring what federal law actually says. Let’s deal with the statutes. First, Cornell Law School’s Legal Information Institute defines a “natural person” as a living human being and distinguishes natural persons from artificial entities such as corporations and partnerships. Then Congress goes even further in federal law. 1 U.S.C. § 8 states that in determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, the words: * “person” * “human being” * “child” * and “individual” include every born alive infant member of the species homo sapiens. So Congress itself recognizes: * human beings, * individuals, * and persons within statutory law. Now go to 22 U.S.C. § 1641. Congress defines “person” to include: * a natural person, * partnership, * association, * corporation, * or body politic. Then Congress separately defines “National of the United States” as: “(A) a natural person who is a citizen of the United States, or who owes permanent allegiance to the United States…” Read that carefully. Congress explicitly connected: * Natural Person * Citizen of the United States * and National of the United States within federal statutory law. Then 46 U.S.C. § 104 states: “In this title, the term ‘citizen of the United States’, when used in reference to a natural person, means an individual who is a national of the United States as defined in section 101(a)(22) of the Immigration and Nationality Act…” Again, Congress expressly distinguishes natural persons from artificial entities. So yes, corporations can sometimes be treated as citizens for limited legal purposes. But that does NOT mean all citizens are corporations or legal fictions. That claim falls apart once you actually read the statutes. The law recognizes: * artificial entities, AND * natural persons. A corporation is artificial. A living human being is a natural person. And Congress itself expressly states that natural persons can be citizens and nationals of the United States. That is federal law — not internet mythology.
