@daniellellecco Or maybe another perspective: when we believe ourselves to be measuring/interpreting the meaning of text, what we're actually doing is gauging/translating the context.

@daniellellecco From the paper I mentioned! If instead of a wire for "dog" or "person", we put an open wire out to the world, then it may be possible to prove that the text can mean anything depending on meaning lent by context. arxiv.org/abs/1904.03478

@TheUAPYogi @PaperBashing @cosmicfibretion I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I don't need to prove anything—that's nature's job. Objective reality consists precisely of that which can be verified. Not all things can be—not everything is object-like—but what can be is an objective part of reality.

It's becoming increasingly clear some conflicts lack a prosaic solution. The core problem is an old one: there can be no shared objective reality between two groups with competing religious truth claims. Maybe it's time to reject religious truth claims.

@Abelaer @mattecapu "a thing needs to be observed from the outside to reliably talk about it" imo is better a characterization of reliability than it is a moral principle

@mattecapu I have exactly the opposite interpretation: most interesting things can talk about themselves---things that can't are sus. Trying to find a meta-level to escape to is never going to work, and the paradoxes should be embraced.

my moral interpretation of Gödel incompleteness theorem: things that talk about themselves are sus it's basically a level-sorting result, strengthening the moral principle that a thing needs to be observed from the outside to reliably talk about it, or funny things may happen
Matteo Capucci@mattecapu

most mathematical theories (in the logician's sense off the word) aren't complete, yet somehow periodically someone freaks out over Gödel incompleteness theorem... what's up with that?

the inner work systems that catch on quickest here are the ones that most closely resemble video games, letting you level up as you explore the map I wonder why a bunch of tech people would gravitate towards those and take them as sacrosanct? mysterious

I like this pov on alignment. I especially appreciate the analogy to the domestication of wolves. Taking 'the limit of value drift' imo would mean something like minimizing (the need for) human intervention and fine tuning during training.

Enough people have asked me about this recently that I should probably post something. It's totally not my area, but here are a couple of (unqualified, unproofread and unstructured) thoughts. Could turn this into a blog post or paper or something if there's sufficient demand.

Finally cleared a block in my schedule to work on a project I’ve been excited about for ages (unified compositional semantics for multiway causality). Would anyone be interested in me livestreaming the process, or is that silly? If yes, do you have any tips/suggestions/requests?
