CHIHWA BONGA CLAN
Bonga Chihwa (also written as Chihwa Bonga or Chihwa cheBonga) is a Shona totem (mutupo) and associated praise name particularly linked to clans in the eastern regions such as Mutambara in Chimanimani (Manicaland Province).
Chihwa is the primary totem (mutupo) and Bonga functions as a chidawo (honorific or sub-totem/praise name).
Etymology
Chihwa: This is the core totem name and directly refers to the African painted wild dog (also known as the African wild dog or hunting dog; scientific name Lycaon pictus; Shona terms include mhumhi, bhumi, bhumhi, or chingekeke for the "flowered" or spotted variety). It symbolizes the animal's distinctive mottled, painted-like coat and pack-hunting behavior. In the context of the totem, "Chihwa" is the specific Shona designation used for this animal as a clan emblem. It is explicitly described as meaning "African painted wild dog (mhumhi)" and is tied to the Mutambara royal clan in eastern Zimbabwe.
Bonga: This is not the primary totem animal (and has no direct link to cats or wild cats, despite occasional mistaken illustrations—a point clan members explicitly reject as derogatory). Instead, "Bonga" is the chidawo (praise/honorific name) derived from a legendary ancestral warrior named Mwaita Sigauke Bonga Chihwa. It serves as an additional identifier or sub-reference within the clan. People with this totem may be addressed as Sigauke, Bonga, or Chihwa, but the underlying mutupo remains Chihwa (the wild dog). The totem praise poem (detembo) often opens with "Chihwa chebonga" or "Maita Bonga Chihwa," blending the two.
The full praise poem (one common version) is:
Maita BONGA CHIHWA
Maita Sigauke
Bonga Chihwa
Mwaita Mutambara
Mwaita WaGarwe
Mutupo wetakagurirana
Matikaha ngekuone tsimba
Kuona mumhu tinodedera
Mwaita Bumhi Muera Imbwa
Wanodya ichifamba
Chadonha pasi hawadyi
Dehwe rehosi tusa vanthu
Karimera mutete
Zvaitwa Ngonyamu
(Extended versions in Shona sources include lines referencing the mhumhi [wild dog], pack hunting like a pack [kuvhima pamwe sedanga], eating while moving [vanodya ichafamba], and associations with garwe.
Historical Background
The Bonga Chihwa totem specifically belongs to the VaMushonga (or Chihwa/Mutambara) clan, often described as having royal or chiefly associations in the Mutambara area of eastern Zimbabwe.
Oral tradition and clan histories trace its origins to migrations from the south. A dedicated book, The History of the VaMushonga: Chihwa Chebonga, documents the clan's roots in the fertile Nguniland (present-day South Africa region) before moving to the sacred grounds of Mutambara in Zimbabwe. This aligns with wider Shona historical patterns involving movements linked to ancient sites (e.g., echoes of Mapungubwe-era influences in some narratives) and the formation of kingdoms like the Mutapa Empire. The clan is tied to the Mutambara chieftaincy and is recognized in some accounts as a royal lineage.
A central legendary figure is Mwaita Sigauke Bonga Chihwa, a great warrior and ancestor credited with supernatural shapeshifting abilities. He was said to transform into different animals (including the wild dog and possibly the crocodile/garwe) during hunts or battles, embodying the totem's themes of cunning, transformation, strategic hunting, and fearlessness. This legend reinforces the clan's identity as intelligent, hardworking, undisputable when angered, and skilled hunters. The praise poem celebrates these traits, referencing the clan's prowess ("vavhimi venjere" — wise hunters), pack-like coordination, and ancestral power.
In contemporary Zimbabwean culture, the totem remains a living identifier for social respect, marriage taboos (avoiding same-totem unions), and pride in heritage. Clan members may reference it in praise poetry, art, or discussions of ancestry. While some informal sources occasionally misassociate it with a tortoise or cat, these are not supported by the praise poems or clan explanations.

This morning at State House, I had the distinct pleasure of receiving a generous donation of 10 brand new, state-of-the-art ambulances equipped with the latest medical technologies including respirators, oxygen delivery systems, defibrillators and advanced patient monitoring units. These ambulances were formally handed over to the Minister of Health and Child Care for onward distribution across all Provinces to strengthen emergency response capacity and improve access to critical healthcare services. In addition, I handover 200,000 litres of diesel, which will directly support the effective deployment and sustained operation of these life-saving units.
This donation has been made possible through the generosity of an astute and maverick young businessman @wicknellchivayo who has a golden heart and continues to tirelessly support various key Government programmes under Vision 2030, which is anchored on modern healthcare systems that leave “No one and No place behind”.
I extend my sincere appreciation to @wicknellchivayo for this gesture, which exemplifies the critical role of the private sector in complementing Government’s efforts to deliver quality service delivery in the health sector. Such partnerships between Government and indigenous businesses reaffirm my administration’s matra that “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”, and I urge other businesspeople within the private sector to emulate this gesture and exemplary conduct. My Administration remains resolute in its focus on strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring that Zimbabwe transitions to world-class health standards as we advance towards an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

Please don’t get caught up in the “leaking DMs” trend, you’re blocking your own blessings.
When your tweet says 1,000 people viewed it, understand this: one of those people could change your life.
Through a job referral, a deal, a door you didn’t even know existed.
In October 2023, I was being dragged on X for the first time 😂
I must have said I take better care of my son than “some two parent households” people didn’t like that, and the dragging began.
But in the middle of that noise, a former Minister DM’d me. He offered me a consulting role.
I did marketing for him remotely, and through that connection I landed another client who needed marketing and help facilitating equipment.
That one inbox turned into over $10,000.
Now imagine if I had been known for leaking DMs, that message never comes, that opportunity never happens.
Be as tough, blunt, even rude as you want in the inbox…
…but never break trust.
Because the same DM you’re tempted to expose today could be the one that changes your life tomorrow.
