Today, our article "Comprehension and appropriateness of complex mobile pictographs for crisis communication", authored by @waidyanatha and myself, was published in "Natural Hazards". I am a bit proud because this is my first peer-reviewed publication sin…lnkd.in/eYZW2AU7

Today is my first day in the office after 805 days of working from home. Feels like time travel to something that is neither future nor past.

@VincentCMueller It shows evidence that face masks offer an up to 67% reduction of viral load - under lab conditions - in a very small room (actually a box) - without ventilation - assuming correct mask use - if the infected is coughing - straight into your face - from half a meter distance

Cotton #masks cut down virus by 50% OUT from infected and by 40% IN to others. So if both wear masks we cut virus & infections to 20% of what we would have without masks (50% x 40%). Case closed: Masks work. #MaskMandate. reut.rs/2Hn4AYT

@VincentCMueller Fair enough, but that's nothing more than a belief. Could also lead to a false impression of safety - also a belief. But regardless - we still don't have any real scientific evidence that the mask mandate has a positive impact. None.

@LutzFrommberger Actually, I think the behavioural effects of wearing masks would be so strong that the reduction is even larger - despite some added risk of infection from incorrect mask use.

@VincentCMueller The multiplication assumption is wrong. They results indicate 33%, not 20. Anyway, to me the practical relevance of this study is near zero. When was the last time somebody coughed straight into your face from half a meter distance?

@LutzFrommberger Thanks for pointer to the source! Numbers very similar? "A cotton mask led to an approximately 20% to 40% reduction in virus uptake compared to no mask ... when a mask was attached to the mannequin that released virus, cotton and surgical masks blocked more than 50% of the virus"

@quassy7 @rmf @Plinz Apple is yet to find a good solution for their usability approach and multi-screen/multi-desktop setups. Already when Apple introduced multiple desktops it became evident that the MacOS approach does not fully translate to it, and nothing has really changed since then.

Is it just me or was it the wrong decision to anchor application menus to the screen instead of the app window? Screens have become arbitrarily large, and we are multi tasking so much.

Sad to hear that Gerhard Goos has passed away. As a student I had to pleasure to attend his computer science introduction courses (that later transformed into his lecture books), and those were amongst the most coherent and enlightening courses I ever had. informatik.kit.edu/309_10773.php

In Luang Prabang for vacation. Quite a new experience to just hang out, without worrying about whether servers are running or not, and no duties waiting the next day. Was good before, even better now.

Dark day for internet freedom: The @Europarl_EN has rubber-stamped copyright reform including #Article13 and #Article11. MEPs refused to even consider amendments. The results of the final vote: 348 in favor, 274 against #SaveYourInternet
