According to DW Africa, South Africa has been ranked the best English-speaking country in Africa and 13th globally, according to Education First (EF) in its 2025 EF English Proficiency Index. Zimbabwe followed closely, ranking second in Africa and also placing 13th worldwide, while Kenya and Zambia ranked 19th and 27th globally, making them third and fourth in Africa, respectively. Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda rounded out the top seven on the continent. The index assessed adult English proficiency across 123 countries, drawing on data from more than 2.2 million participants. English remains widely used in these countries, playing a central role in government, education, and the media.
