What's around the cat's neck isn't an ordinary collar, but a finely crafted piece of brocade with light blue, orange, and red motifs. In 19th-century Japan, domestic cats were already highly valuable; because they kept mice away from silkworm farms, they saved millions of cocoons. In the ลŒshลซ region, a cat sold for five times the price of a horse.

REVENANT early vampires were often termed 'revenants' a generic name for returners from beyond the grave. Baudelaire's 'Revenant' is driven to return by passion: Softly as brown-eyed Angels rove I will return to thy alcove, And glide upon the night to thee, Treading the shadows silently, 1857

Cat on the Roof. Artist: Masaharu Aoyama, 1950. Medium: Woodblock print on paper. Collection: DePauw University Art Galleries. Cats have a long and layered history in Japanese art. Their first arrival on the islands coincides with the 6th-century arrival of Buddhism in Japan; Buddhist monks brought cats with them to protect sacred manuscripts from mice. By the Edo period (1603-1868), cats had become a common motif in ukiyo-e prints. They were depicted as protectors of silk production, companions to aristocratic women, and even supernatural creatures.Aoyama's cat, however, doesn't directly carry any of these traditional symbols. It's neither a luck-bringing maneki-neko nor a fearsome nekomata. It's a simple, everyday, real cat- perhaps just one of the strays wandering across the tiled roofs of a Japanese neighborhood.

IRISH VAMPIRE KING In Glenullin, is a stone which marks the grave of ABHARTACH, an ancient #vampire. Slain with a Yew sword, he was buried upright with his feet towards the sky & a large stone cross & thorns were placed on the grave to hinder his return #MythologyMonday

BLAKE'S VAMPIRE โ€˜The Ghost of a Fleaโ€™, a miniature painting by visionary artist and poet William Blake, is an image of vampirism in action; the flea holds a cup for blood drinking and stares eagerly towards it. Surprisingly, it was produced in 1819, the same year as Polidoriโ€™s Vampyre #FolkloreSunday
