🕊️ Marquette University and the University Advancement team mourn the loss of Rev. Fred Zagone, S.J., university chaplain, who was beloved by Marquette University alumni across the world. Known simply as “Father Fred” to many, he was the ultimate connector and gained his energy by attending hundreds of university events, and even more so in countless interactions with alumni during life’s most meaningful moments. He fought cancer with courage and humility, attending university events until the very end of his life. Marquette sophomore Nick Gross reflects on an unexpected encounter with Pope Leo during a pilgrimage to Rome with fellow Knights of Columbus members. 🤝  The fateful handshake that now lives as a framed photo inside Nick’s dorm room nearly never happened. “It took an act of God,” Gross said. “We were supposed to be outside in the area where the Popemobile comes through Vatican Square. But a torrential downpour moved everyone inside.” Before they knew it, the knights found themselves standing in a center aisle as the Pope approached. “This is happening,” they said to each other. They draped a Marquette University flag over a gate, which drew Pope Leo’s attention. He approached, shook hands and said two words that continue to resonate. “Go Marquette.” Read the full story: marquetteu.com/3MPhKzz

So great to see Wisconsin athlete and gold medalist Jordan Stolz’s story told on the international stage. Trained at #MKE’s Pettit National Ice Center and learned to skate on a pond in his backyard after watching the Olympics as a kid. ❤️🤍💙 @WSJ wsj.com/sports/olympic…

Over Christmas break, students from the Marquette chapter of the Knights of Columbus participated in a pilgrimage to Rome, marking the conclusion of the Holy Year. The pilgrimage was led by Rev. Michael Maher, S.J., hall minister for Wells Tower. While in Rome, the group attended the first Wednesday general audience of the new year with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and had the opportunity to greet the pope following the audience.  During the encounter, Pope Leo acknowledged the group, saying, “Go Marquette.”  #WeAreMarquette #JesuitEducated

Dear Marquette community, As we celebrate this Advent season of hope and waiting, you can see signs of preparation for the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ, around campus. Westowne Square came alive on a crisp December evening as Marquette students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered for the annual Christmas tree blessing and lighting celebration. A Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm provided a seasonal backdrop for the festivities, and the All-Campus Choir and Pep Band led beautiful renditions of Christmas hymns and carols. Demonstrating our commitment to the Society of Jesus’ Universal Apostolic Preference of Caring for Our Common Home, we have planted a fir tree outside the Alumni Memorial Union that will serve as the site for Christmas tree lighting celebrations for years to come. Watch this year’s Christmas video to see this annual tradition come to life. On Christmas Day, this season of waiting and preparation will conclude, and we will hear this passage from Luke’s Gospel: “When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.” (Luke 2:17–18) These verses describe how the shepherds found the infant Jesus lying in a manger in Bethlehem, just as the angel had told them, and they, in turn, shared the good news with all throughout the land. The amazement at being the first to learn that the Lord had been born for them must have been overwhelming for the humble shepherds and the people of Bethlehem. I hope you are able to keep the feeling of amazement about Jesus Christ’s birth alive throughout the upcoming year. At Marquette, we have much to be grateful for as we look ahead to the New Year. We will continue to celebrate and share the good news of the countless ways our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are living out our Catholic, Jesuit mission in service to others. On behalf of the Marquette University community and my family, I wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas! Dr. Kimo Ah Yun President
