Good luck to Jermain Defoe in his first managerial job. Be fascinating to see how it works out at Woking. National League can be unforgiving, a relentless test of decision-making. Takes over a team whose fortunes have been improved by the interim management of Craig Ross, Jake Hyde and Dale Gorman. Defoe has to build on that. He will certainly drive standards with his strong work ethic, will to win and focus on detail (his nutrition routine is well-known - pescatarian, teetotal). Defoe was an elite footballer who played for 22 years. He knows how to maximise talent. Defoe has always been ambitious, invariably seizing opportunities from a kid onwards, going to Lilleshall, going on loan from West Ham to Bournemouth and immediately flourishing. Had a run of scoring on debuts. He delivers. He began learning the coaching trade in Spurs academy and under Steven Gerrard at Rangers. Has the experienced Paul Bracewell as his assistant (staff five-a-sides should be worth watching). Defoe’s also a very likeable and genuine character, and people skills are obviously vital in management. He’s suffered disappointments in a largely glittering career. Controversially left out of a couple of tournaments with England. Both situations could have been handled better and that further rankled the frustrated Defoe. Woking players will like him. No airs or graces to a player who had such a stellar career. It's good to see home-grown coaches getting a chance. It's down to Defoe to seize it now.

Jermain Defoe is the new Woking boss! 🤝 It's his first full managerial role, having previously held a brief caretaker position at Rangers in 2021.
